“After an album release follows a big tour, you say yes to all sorts of projects, and before you know it, a year has passed,” Martyn mused to inthemix last year. “Nowadays I have more focus. I got rid of any side projects and now it’s crunch time in the next few months to have [a new album] finished for release in Spring of 2011.”
Well, here we are in 2011, and the celebrated Dutchman is gearing up to release his latest LP Ghost People on Brainfeeder, the label overseen by fellow musical genius Flying Lotus. While not a great deal is known about the new album yet, Martyn set the bar high for himself with 2009’s effort Great Lengths. Our reviewer called it a “dense and hypnotic ride”, and the general consensus seemed to concur. In August, Martyn will release two new tracks Masks/Viper as a precursor to the LP (listen to a rip of Masks from Benji B’s radio show below).
However Ghost People sounds as a whole, you can sure it’ll fit within the definition of ‘Martyn music’. As he writes in his bio: “I always like to think my stuff is ‘music for a warm but rainy day’…I try not to think of it as dubstep or techno, or house or drum & bass, it’s not about genres, it’s about music.”
