When the weather takes a turn for the chilly, we here at inthemix can’t resist keeping a jealous eye on what’s happening in the summery Northern Hemisphere. Among the many flagship festivals happening around Europe in July – several of which we covered in our recent ‘Wish We Were There’ feature – coming in somewhat under the radar is the Balaton Sound weekender in Hungary. Well, we say under the radar, but when you’re pulling a line-up this illustrious and an attendance of 100,000, it’s not exactly niche.
With Heineken as its backer, the fifth edition of Balaton Sound stretched from 7 to 10 July at the picturesque beach, Zamárdi, along the shore of Lake Balaton. As such, the festivities seem to be somewhere between a vast all-night festival and a sun-soaked beach holiday.
Certainly no expense was spared on the line-up. On night one, Snoop Dogg took the stage before Tiesto, while elsewhere Sebastian Ingrosso and Axwell went back-to-back, and techno fans were treated to their own top-shelf line-up.
The rest of the weekend was equally star-studded: Portishead, Ricardo Villalobos, Underworld, Armin van Buuren, David Guetta, Jeff Mills and Magnetic Man all enjoying top billing. As you can see from the gallery below, this might be the festival you think about adding to a 2012 European adventure.
