Hot on the heels of the trailer for acid house romp Weekender comes the first-look at another UK drugs-and-dance-music movie, Ecstasy – or Irvine Welsh’s Ecstasy if you’re following the marketing department.

The ‘dark romantic comedy’ is based on an Irvine Welsh novella The Undefeated from his Ecstasy: Three Tales Of Chemical Romance series, and it’s a production that’s been ten years in the making. Welsh is of course the scribe behind cult classic Trainspotting, which spawned its own, greatly-revered film version. If you’re looking to plumb the scummy world of chemical dependence, Welsh is your man.

Ecstasy stars Adam Sinclair as Lloyd Buist, a 30-something club fanatic with a taste for the high life. His part-time career involves smuggling drugs from Amsterdam to Edinburgh for a local gangster. However, after falling for disaffected Heather (Kristin Kreuk) on a dancefloor, Lloyd attempts to break from his old life. If that sounds all a little clichéd, it’s worth remembering there’s always a sting in Welsh’s tales.

The club scene in Edinburgh is a key part of the film, and director Rob Heydon has gone for authenticity. As expected, there’ll be a star-studded soundtrack, with Slam, Mark Knight and The Chemical Brothers just a couple of the names involved.

Ecstasy also welcomes back John Digweed to the big screen following his cameo in 2000’s Groove. This time he’s DJing at one of the clubs Heather and Lloyd are blissing out in, and you see him chatting about the appearance in the video below.

“I was DJing in Scotland and they came down and filmed me,” Digweed recounts. “The night was incredible. It was Musica’s fourth birthday in Edinburgh and everyone was jumping off the walls, so the actors came in and they were doing all the filming. But you wouldn’t have known they were in there.”

Given its journey to cinemas has taken a whole decade, it’s fair to say there’s a lot riding on Ecstasy. Could the Welsh effect make this one a new cult classic? With over 350,000 people already signed up to the Facebook page, excitement seems pretty high. The film premieres this September at Toronto Film Festival.
