New Order have reunited again, although there have been a few line-up changes since the band last played a live show in 2006. Keyboard player Gillian Gilbert will be rejoining the group for her first show in over decade joining founding members Bernard Sumner (vocals) and Stephen Morris (drums). However original New Order bassist and questionable DJ Peter Hook will not be be part of the action. Tom Chapman will play Hook’s basslines and Phil Cunningham will also be on hand to play additional guitar and keyboard.
The band has reunited for just two shows; one in Brussels on October 17th and another in Paris the following night. The shows are benefit concerts for film producer Michael Shamberg who is been seriously ill and requires constant medical attention. Shamberg produced several clips for New Order including True Faith, Touched By The Hand Of God and Regret. He has also worked on feature films including Erin Brockovich, A Fish Called Wanda, Garden State, Gattaca and Pulp Fiction.
This unexpected reunion follows Sumner’s declaration to The Guardian in July that New Order has “no future”, which prompted Hook to quip on Twitter: “The truth is Bernard’s a twat and he always has been”. Hardly a surprise, then, to see he’s not strapping on the bass for these benefit shows.
