There’s been no shortage of talk here on inthemix about the 2011 DJ Mag ‘Top 100 DJs’ poll, which saw chart-troubling superstar David Guetta ascending to the #1 spot. Many would’ve expected Armin van Buuren to retain the crown for a fifth year running. Well, that’s certainly what the Dutchman’s fans at home were hoping.

The results of the 2011 poll were announced last Thursday 20 October at a special event during Amsterdam Dance Event. With Armin DJing at the ceremony and a lengthy roll-call of dance music luminaries in attendance, it was a key night on the ADE program.

Gracious guy that he is, it was Armin who presented the top award to Guetta, but the Dutchies who filled the room weren’t feeling so gracious. Cue this very awkward moment of passing the mantle…check out the video below.

Wow... Thes one of the best awkward silences i've ever heard. Pretty great hosting the awards at the ADE where i imagine theres only purists in attendance (correct me if im wrong) and having such a tosspot win

Did he deserve respect, applause and the common human decency to not be booed? Yes.

I hate Guetta as much as the next guy on here, but seriously, this just makes dance music fans look like a bunch of stuck-up elitists.

i remember guetta at summadayze festival earlier this year, playing after armin. first minute was soo good my friends and i decided to leave the event.

That's Dennis Ruyer hosting, he hosts Radio 538's dance depratment and plays all kinds of great shit and interviews has mixes from people like pig and dan through to avicii so he's well on the ball music wise.

mlirosi is the voice of reason - Americans have picked up on dance music, there's lots of them and they generally have pretty simple musical taste, so of course Guetta was gonna win. People need to grow a brain and realise this is a popularly voted poll.

What does it have to do with the Seppo's? Dance music's caught on and has become mainstream everywhere.

I hate Guetta's music as much as the next guy, but he has been DJing for longer than some of us have been on this earth, and he's worked pretty damn hard to get where he's at, so why not let him have his glory? It's not going to influence my musical tastes one iota, and if it's going to help make the music I'm into underground again then I'm all for it.

Let the kids have their pop music I say.

As much as I hate him, I feel kinda sorry for him. For the rest of his life he's gonna have to live with the fact that he betrayed EDM to the mainstream, and could probably never go back

No surprises here with Guetta. As much as I love trance, trance only ends up on top here because its a dutch event and the dutchies/euros love the trance. Guetta has been making more music to appeal to the kiddies, covering both the electronic and the commercial. Trance is obviously generally much less commercial. No more trance up in the djmag top 3 and more Guetta's now that the kiddies are on board...

Oh my, that really was something. Well, apart for them being Dutch, this is also logical because c'mon - those were real EDM fans at the ceremony, while Guetta got all the mainstream votes.

In my experience, people who listen to Guetta don't listen to other electronic music...
