A few days ago, a techno festival was declared responsible for the death of an innocent dolphin. Now, another techno festival has been the scene of assault-via-fire extinguisher. Could this be the most destructive musical genre of all time?
At Belgium’s ‘I Love Techno’ festival, member of dance collective Club Cheval Victor Watel (who also produces under the moniker Panteros666) channelled his inner brat in a big way. Allegedly, Watel attacked fellow performer Psycatron’s hotel room and with the foam from a fire extinguisher, destroying over ten thousand dollars worth of musical equipment.
Apparently, the drama started when Watel was told to ‘go away’ after waking the band at 6.30am in search of drugs. The producer quickly returned armed with the fire extinguisher, spraying foam over all variety of musical gear and causing the members of Psycatron to be rudely awoken, unable to breath and close to vomiting. When Psycatron confronted Watel, he hid behind a friend who proceeded to kick band member Paul Bergenhenegouwen in the knee, dislocating the joint and forcing him into a wheelchair (at least for the duration of the trip).
The best part of this whole ridiculous saga is the Twitter/Facebook war it’s sparked. Psycatron tweeted that they have a video of the event that will be online soon (we can’t wait!) and wrote “To anyone even considering booking this Panteros666 for their event, you might wish to think again”. After much bitchy to-and-fro between the warring artists, Panteros666’s Facebook posted a statement “to clarify and put an end to” the saga. The statement reads:
“Panteros666 has presented his sincere apologies to Psycatron members and is taking full responsibility to all material damages caused. It’s an unfortunate story, which Psycatron was the direct victims but were not the target – whether it is as individuals or artist. Panteros666 was absolutely not aware who was staying in the room he damaged with the fire extinguisher; he was just fooling around and a stupid joke went wrong.
This story is now behind us, and the artists would like to move on. We have witnessed several offensive comments, verbal & physical threats and irrelevant debate on the Internet about this, which both parties don’t approve, as it reflects neither what happen nor the circumstances. What happened that night concerns the artist and their entourage only.”
Also present at the Belgian festival were Boys Noize, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs and Madeon. So far, these acts have managed to perform without becoming embroiled in any cat fights.
