If Swedish House Mafia’s show at Madison Square Garden last month proved anything, it’s that the trio aren’t exactly partial to small-scale performances. Leading the charge in continuing this trend is SHM member Axwell, who’s just revealed some extravagant new plans.
As reported by Rolling Stone, the DJ is set to follow the Madison Square show with the very epic-sounding Cosmic Opera, a dance event hosted by New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom.
Just like a real opera, the event takes place in acts: three monthly, six hour events using the sort of 3D mapping techniques we’ve come to expect from the likes of Skrillex and Deadmau5. That’s not all – there will also be “baroque-era performers”, dancers and acrobats contributing to the 360-degree display. Jesus Christ.
As for Axwell’s role in all of this? The SHM member will be conducting the affair, both manning decks and directing opera singers (yes, there’s those too). According to event creator Justin Cohen, Cosmic Opera perhaps marks the dawning of a new era for DJ performances. “It is a revolutionary time for dance music,” Cohen stated. “To go with it, we needed to establish a new type of event.”
The event kicks off February 24 – so we’re guessing Axwell will be very nicely warmed up for SHM’s sets at Future Music Festival in March. Excited yet?
