UPDATE:
Well, a weird story just got weirder. According to dance music messiah Perez Hilton (we think?) and this typo-riddled site, Khloe Kardashian (!) will host and the panel will include Steve Aoki, Paul Oakenfold and Jamie Jones. Apparently house legend Frankie Knuckles is also on board as a mentor. We don’t know what to believe! Has 1 April come early?
“DJs are the new rock stars, it feels like the right time to make this show.” That’s Simon Cowell speaking, the mogul behind one of UK TV’s biggest cash-cows X Factor. Having already created its fair share of chart-climbing pop stars, the much-franchised show is about to launch a new talent search “to find the world’s greatest DJs”. Cowell has teamed his own production house with Overbrook Entertainment, the juggernaut headed by Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith, to create the series.
One newspaper report pitches this X-Factor as a path to “discovering the next Deadmau5”, which you imagine wouldn’t sit well with the cantankerous Canadian. However, the mau5 took to his Facebook page to actually back the idea.
“There’s just no way in hell im going to come out guns blazing with an attitude like ‘fuck this, this isnt real DJ’ing, or has nothing to do with anything and blah blah blah’,” he begins. “This concept, if anything, is going to catapult the awareness of EDM through the roof. People dont have to embrace this as gospel… nobody’s asking anyone to.”
There’s a lot of extra musing in between, but here’s his final two-cents: “All i hope is that we can all tune into a show like this, laugh at the failures, and recognize and embrace originality / creativity / showmanship and passion,” he wrote, “and for the purists and self proclaimed elitists out there, feel free to keep your noses in the air while were all VERY much pressured to compete or collaborate with all the new talent that will arrive from the bowlful of hype the EDM “scene” will receieve.”
