Everyone’s favourite punching-bag, the Fergie and will.i.am-led joint The Black Eyed Peas, have today been dealt another blow: this time, from trance legend Paul van Dyk. Following James Murphy and uh, Perez Hilton’s lead, PvD’s done his bit to stick it to the the chart-climbers, quipping, “They were so fucking amazing and now they’re so extremely not.”
“With all respect, I don’t consider The Black Eyed Peas electronic dance music. It’s cheesy pop,” PvD told inthemix in an interview last night. “And the thing is, I had been a massive fan of them years and years ago, [but] if you listen to the some of the tracks like Don’t Phunk With My Heart, you just wonder: what happened to them? They were so fucking amazing and now they’re so extremely not.
“Instead of having an idea about their art form, they basically just run trend after trend,” the Future Music Festival recruit continued. “When I feel this great gift to make music on this planet is being misused for just individual financial purposes, then I’m getting somewhat pissed. There are tonnes of people who didn’t like the Black Eyed Peas before, who like them now. Well, for me it’s visa-versa.”
It’s not the first time PvD’s voiced his opinion on the matter – in a recent interview with South African website Zoopy, he let rip at one David Guetta. “This dancey-pop music on the radio these days is probably the lowest level pop music has ever reached,” he lamented. “It’s kind of sad to see really cool RnB, or former RnB artists, become D-class, cheesy dance acts. To be honest, I don’t really consider David Guetta an electronic artist anyway.”
Stay tuned for the full Paul van Dyk interview coming soon, complete with more BEP-bashing alongside talk of the Evolution stage show and his abiding love of Australia.
