What can I say? My musical roots lie in the land of rock. Both my older sister and my dad were rock n roll advocates, and of course this meant that I was too. But as I grew, my musical tastes became, well, different (I'm not sure if the words 'more mature' are adequate).
Suddenly I was only interested in all things hip hop. I was no longer influenced by my family, I was now influenced by my friends, who were at the time all listening to Eminem and Dr Dre. I initially listened to only this mainstream stuff, but Hilltop Hood's 'Nosebleed Section' (which is, these days, arguably very mainstream, but I heard it before all that) introduced me to a world beyond. I fell in love mainly with hip hop's supreme adaptability and diversity. I said to myself 'so, this is my musical taste, and this is it for life'.
But again I was wrong. Again my tastes developed. And this time I believe I can truly say my tastes matured. No longer can I be defined by a label. (I can hear you all groaning out there, saying 'Oh, how cliched, this guy doesn't conform to labels, I haven't heard that one before'. But hear me out.) When someone asks me now 'What type of music do you listen to' I no longer tell them 'rock' or 'hip hop', I simply tell them, 'Mate, I just like music'. If a song sounds good, I like it. I don't care what musical genre it falls into. Now, this certainly does not make me an expert. Far from it. I know quite a bit about hip hop, particularly the Australian scene, but that is about it. But I do love music. And I do know when I like a song.
Let me tell you one short story to demonstrate this newfound love of 'music'. I was at a Full Moon Party in Koh Phangan in Thailand, expecting to listen to some mainstream club tracks, thinking I was going to be dancing to pop music all night. Some randoms I had just met dragged me into a bar that played only drum n bass. The music was fast and it was dirty. And I loved it. Loved it! I am not usually one who can rip up a dance floor for hours on end, but on this occasion I tore up the d-floor for over three hours, resting only to rehydrate. It was awesome.
Of course, music is not my only interest. I love partying, travelling , reading. But whenever I do any of these things, music is always an essential element (except maybe when I'm reading). However, I think my greatest passion in life is writing. In a perfect world I would either be a music or travel writer. So, I guess it means that in an impossibly perfect world, maybe I would be a nomadic ethnographer of tribal ritualistic tunes. Or maybe not.
