Session 54

inthemix Podcast

It’s a big episode – and not only because of the quality of tracks we’re serving up this fortnight! We speak with the SOS collective of Desyn Masiello, Omid 16b and Demi about their new Balance CD. We’ve also got fresh new music from Belgian label-boss Headman, James Stevens of Infusion, UK breakbeat outfits Atomic Hooligan and Slyde, and also Melbourne new-wave hip-hop/electro four-piece Gameboy/Gamegirl. But, most importantly, session 54 marks the end of an era. After 2 years as co-host of the inthemix podcasts we’re saying goodbye to Mo’Funk, who is packing his record bag and heading international. With a summer of gigs in the US and Europe on the cards it’s an opportunity he simply can’t refuse! Make sure you tune in next fortnight as we take the wraps off our shiny new co-host.

Feature Artists

SOS (Desyn Masiello, Omid 16b & Demi)
Omid 16b – Full Of E_mty [SexOnWax]

The Balance series of CDs have grown to become the most anticipated of the progressive dance music genre in recent years, overtaking longstanding heroes Global Underground with their forward thinking approach to artists selected to helm each CD. It’s no mean feat, and it makes us all the more proud knowing that such a trailblazing series is operated out of Melbourne. The thirteenth Balance CD is due for release in April, and it will be taken care of by not one, not two, but three of the progressive scene’s most exciting talents. SOS – aka Sex On Substance – is the UK based collective of Desyn Masiello, Omid 16b and Demi. They’ve put together one of the most anticipated Balance CDs to date, with three discs chock full of deep house, tech and progressive. We caught up with Omid to talk about SOS’s approach to the CD.

Also On This Podcast…

Headman – Catch Me If U Can [Relish/Inertia]
New business from Belgian producer, DJ and label boss Headman, who has been keeping himself incredibly busy of late. Apart from heavy touring, which saw him visit Australia twice last year, he’s also found time to remix the likes of Chromeo, The Gossip, Zombie Nation and Roxy Music, to name a few. And, that’s not all, as he’s continued to grow his successful Relish Recordings label, which released the Riot In Belgium hit ‘La Musique’ last year, and he’s also just finished up work on his third solo album, ‘Catch Me’.

Gameboy/Gamegirl – Pumps And Rumps (Zombie Disco Squad Remix) [Sweat It Out]
Melbourne four-piece Gameboy/Gamegirl definitely have a unique sound, and it saw them snapped by reigning inthemix50 #1 DJ Ajax for his brand new label Sweat It Out. They’ll be his first release in fact! They’ve released their debut EP, called ‘Golden Ghetto Sex’, and will be hitting the road for live shows around the country in March and April to launch it. A favourite of the underground blog community worldwide, from the EP we have the Zombie Disco Squad remix of ‘Pumps And Rumps’.

AngelFreq – Nothing At All (Jamie Stevens Vocal Mix) [Audio Therapy]
Ibiza based DJ, singer and songwriter Angelique has MySpace to thank for her upcoming release on Dave Seaman’s Audio Therapy record label, as it’s where she first made contact with Jamie Stevens of Infusion. Stevens was so impressed by her vocals he offered to remix her track ‘Nothing At All’, and the result is a deep and sexy slice of rolling progressive that takes us right back to 2001. It’s got us very excited for the long awaited return of Infusion, who are said to be releasing a new album this year. Stay tuned for updates on that!

Atomic Hooligan – I Don’t Care [Botchit & Scarper]
Atomic Hooligan have long been revered as one of the most impressive outfits in the breakbeat scene, known in equal measures for their production work and remixes, as well as energetic DJ sets and live shows. Following on from their 2005 album ‘You Are Here’, which scored them a Breakspoll Award in 2006 for Best Album, the boys are finally set to return with their latest LP, ‘Sex Drugs and Blah Blah Blah’. It signals an exciting new direction for the band, continuing their move away from strictly breakbeat based tracks by incorporating elements of rock, indie, house, electro and techno. This is the album’s first single ‘I Don’t Care’.

Slyde – Sex N’ Drugs [Finger Lickin’/Inertia]
Part of UK powerhouse label Finger Lickin’, home to Krafty Kuts, the Plump DJs and Soul of Man, Slyde have a new single out now which – like the Hooligans – sees them treading a new path. A cover of the Ian Dury classic, ‘Sex N Drugs’ sees Slyde going for a much rockier sound, but it’s still got their signature breakbeat which will make it perfect for the dancefloor.
