Session 58 feat. Dukes of Windsor

inthemix Podcast

This fortnight we’ve got a broadcast that’s bursting at the seams with the hottest new dance tracks. Tune in to episode 58 as we’ll be speaking with Melbourne indie crossover act the Dukes of Windsor, as well as featuring the Grafton Primary remix of their new single ‘It’s A War’. We’ve also got the Cut Copy rework of Mercy Arms, the new single from Skint label boss Midfield General, Baltimore legend Dave Nada’s take on Time Machine’s latest track, as well as Dopamine, Rico Tubbs and more. Don’t forget that the inthemix podcasts are now ‘enhanced’, meaning you can find out more about any of the artists we feature by clicking on the artwork in the corner of your screen – so long as you’re listening through iTunes!

Feature Artist
Dukes of Windsor – It’s A War (Grafton Primary Remix) [Universal]

Melbourne band the Dukes of Windsor will have a recognisable name in the club scene, having teamed up with TV Rock for the radio hit ‘The Others’ in 2007. They’re more than a one hit wonder, though, and are set to prove their longevity having just spent the past few months in Sweden recording their second album, ‘Minus’. In a similar vein to indie-dance crossover acts like Midnight Juggernauts or The Presets, the Dukes of Windsor have a sound that appeals to fans of both rock and club music, their new single ‘It’s A War’ already getting a lot of attention. We caught up with the band’s frontman Jack, finding out what it was like to record the album in a disused mental asylum 10 hours north of Stockholm, where the temperature manage to drop below minus 36.

Mercy Arms – Kept Low (Cut Copy Remix) [Levity]
Local indie kids the Mercy Arms have been working on their debut album recently, and reports indicate it’s almost ready to see the light of day. The album has been produced by Tony Cohen, who is something of a veteran having worked with legendary acts like The Bad Seeds and Beasts of Bourbon in the past. To warm up to the release the Mercy Arms have undertaken a weekly residency throughout May, playing shows in Sydney at Club 77 on Wednesdays and in Melbourne at Pogo. We feature their track ‘Kept Low’, given a remix by the boys from Cut Copy, who had the Mercy Arms tour with them last year.

Midfield General feat. Vila – Disco Sirens [Skint/Stomp]
Having released his debut album 8 years ago, it’s definitely been a long time between drinks for Midfield General, aka Damian Harris – the founder of Skint Records with the one and only Fatboy Slim. With a new album now ready to go, ‘General Disarray’, it sees him exploring a new direction in his sound, teaming up with a long list of interesting collaborators including Noel Fielding of the Mighty Boosh, Dave from Soulwax, and Ed Banger’s finest Busy P and Xavier of Justice. The album took shape in Paris, which is where Damian moved in 2005 when seeking new musical inspiration. He finished it up back at home in Brighton, and this is the first single, ‘Disco Sirens’, featuring Australia’s very own Vila of the Bumblebeez.

Dopamine – Brave New World [Title Fight]
Returning to Australia after 8 weeks spent in the UK and Europe on tour, Dopamine continues to expand and refine his sound in 2008, now known to drop everything from fidget and electro through to tech and even minimal. His tracks have received support from a wide range of DJs, including John Acquaviva, Chris Liebling, Meat Katie, Elite Force and Plump DJs. This is his latest release on the Title Fight label, ‘Brave New World’.

Time Machine – Something We’re Becoming (Dave Nada Remix) [Shogun]
Following acclaim for their 2004 album ‘Slow Your Roll’, good time hip-hop trio Time Machine are back again, and they have a brand new LP in their hot little hands, ‘Life Is Expensive’. Having built a reputation for their energetic live shows at the coolest clubs in Los Angeles and New York, they’ve also set the blog scene alight with their recent bootleg remixes of MIA, Kid Sister and Janet Jackson. Now Time Machine have had the tables turned on them, with two of Baltimore’s finest – Dave Nada and Scottie B – taking turns at remixing their new single ‘Something We’re Becoming’.

Biz – Get Loose [Cliq]
Biz has been a stalwart of the Sydney techno scene for many years, and although he’s not out in the clubs as much as he used to be he’s still working away with his successful Machine Musik production tuition. Based in Darlinghurst, Biz has taught people like Riot In Belgium and The Potbelleez the ins and outs of music production, with classes offered for Ableton Live, Reason, Cubase, Logic and Protools. Of course he’s always making music himself, and this is his latest track ‘Get Loose’, which has been charted by techno godfather Dave Clarke. It’ll be out on Beatport soon, with remixes to come from Deepchild and others. If you want to find out more about classes with Biz head to his website below.

Rico Tubbs – Gangsters [Menu Music]
Taking his name from a detective on 80s TV show Miami Vice, breakbeat producer Rico Tubbs is undoubtedly the biggest thing to have emerged on the Finnish dance music scene since the Bomfunk MCs. That’s no coincidence, though, as Rico was actually a member of the group at one point. How weird is that? He’s been voted Best DJ in Finland for several years running, and he has an album called ‘Knuckle Sandwich’ out soon through UK label Menu Music.
