Daniel 'palaeo-tech' Sanders didn't grow up around a piano. Nor a guitar. Nor even a drum machine. Turns out that was probably good for everyone's sleep patterns, particularly where the latter is concerned.
But, when the folks have a swag of cracking records – a dash Michael Jackson, a pinch of Stevie Wonder and a liberal sprinkling of David Bowie or Kraftwerk – it doesn't take long for a bit of the magic to leave an impression, even if exposing him to The Sex Pistols and Public Enemy was an ill idea.
Not far later and after too much time spent loafing around university, writing badly and listening to Underworld, Bjork, Nine Inch Nails, Sasha and early Chemical Brothers records, the pipe, slippers and tweed jacket of grandpa-pseudo-intelligentsia-nerd-dom got traded in for headphones and a record bag. A lesser of two evils perhaps but let's face it, a pretty fucking sterling alternative.
After learning that playing 'La Ventoline' rather loudly on a Tuesday night at Calypso is probably a bad idea (even if it's fun), and that belt drive turntables really are shit to learn on, palaeo-tech finally got something right and received third place in the 2008 Central Station DJ Comp [may the grand old record store rest in peace].
Now, with a few gigs at revered Brisbane club Bar Soma under his belt [including a three hour warm up for A Guy Called Gerald], palaeo-tech is well and truly ready to prove that Ricardo Villalobos records really do work pretty much anywhere.
