(Vicious/Shock)
The story behind this release is; Cabin Crew (Ben Garden and Rob Kittler) of Australia and Sunset Strippers of the UK both sampled the same original song at the same time, despite being a world apart. Sony granted the Sunset Strippers the rights to the original and of course denied Cabin Crew. Then, totally out of left field Boy Meets Girl (the original artist and author of the song) re-recorded the vocal for Cabin Crew making it possible for our local lads to release the tune as “Star2Fall” on Australian independent Vicious. Both tunes are due for release on Monday 28th February; let the games begin!
The first mix on the single is a full-on vocal assault; it’s the Radio Mix. It opens with a huge uplifting male echoed vocal, and a big bassline. The level of cheese here is 11/10; it’s definitely cheesier than your average funky house number. The vocal is something about ‘waiting for the star to fall, in my arms baby, yeah’; yikes! The saving grace here is the big-ass-shaking bassline, which is more than likely to have your local house club air-punching at 1:00am every Saturday for a few months. The Vandalism Mix is a more club friendly version. A standard padded drum opens the track, then the vocal creeps in and within a minute it’s engulfed the tune. A flanged synth swell brings us into the break down and out again accompanied by the vocal with echo effects. A very basic tune, think an extended version of the radio edit. The pick of the single is the Club Mix. It features harder drums, less vocal and borders more on commercial house than straight out pure-cheese. Don’t be fooled; although it filters the vocal and adds some obvious house elements it’s still difficult to stomach.
I’m not sure who would actually buy this. It’s very commercial house, too vocal for most house DJs, not cool enough for the WILD series and ‘too techno’ for the rest. It’s definitely not the next “Call On Me”, I think Eric Prydz would be insulted by that. For the sake of the game I support Vicious as my Sony Camera broke the other day.
