(Visionary Underground)
Hailing from the UK are audio visual breakbeat collective ‘Visionary Underground’. As writers, producers, lyricists and visual artists they have been grabbing attention all over the place. Their sound is a wicked synthesis of drum n bass, hip hop, dub and asian grooves. ‘Keep the Grime On’ is their official debut album.
15 solid and original tracks in all, this album contains a stellar line up of collaborators and guests, but at the heart of the VU controls are founder, writer and producer ‘DJ FeelFree’, lyricist and front man ‘Damion’, and co-founder and resident VJ ‘Coco’. With a heavy resonating bass line at its core, here you will be exposed to tightly wound rhythms, submerged grooves and scorching vocals. Playing out as well in the clubs as it does the headphones, the editing is tight and precise as the pace shifts from warm-up to peak-time to after-hours.
From a consistently good tracklist, standouts include; ‘Militant’, featuring Aref Durvesh, Sonia Mehta and Dr Das, this tune rolls out a superbly executed frenzy of breaks alongside an intoxicating blend of tabla and shenai action. ‘Eye of the Storm’ sees Pandit Dinesh making a guest appearance on this epic journey that introduces a tremendous turbo fuelled breakdown, and Mc Navigator joins forces on ‘Make It Happen’, a deeply mesmerising number that combines perfectly pitched basslines with a delicious hook that takes you well away.
Striking that chord between playful stomp and dance floor carnage, ‘Keep the Grime On’ is sure to be the start of something very, very large for Visionary Underground.
