2006 saw the DROP crew make a triumphant return to Brisbane clubland after a yearlong hiatus, delivering quality acts such as German minimal techno maestro Steve Bug, Perth uber-producer Kriece, Sydney’s Mark Murphy, Byron’s Dave Basek and local live act Murray Antill to an ever-increasing fanbase.
The cronies make a much anticipated return in 2007 with a renewed focus on pushing upcoming local talent, so it’s appropriate that breakthrough electro-tech act Segue head proceedings for the first party of the year.
One of a new breed of live electronica practitioners who made an impression locally in the second half of 06, the duo comprising Brisbane dance music stalwarts Leo Hede and Dave Dri has already racked up an impressive list of achievements – sets at Elements, DROP and Plexus, supports for Jaytech and King Unique, and inclusion of their track ‘Grind’ on an inthemix.com.au podcast.
DROP founder mag00 opens proceedings with a three hour set of the deep, minimal techy house sound he has made his own in Brisbane – warm-up sets for Sasha & Digweed, Trentemoller, Thomas Schumacher and a closing set after Darren Emerson at Summafieldayze in the past 12 months show just how highly regarded he is by the power-brokers of dance music in Queensland.
Closing honours go to Scott Walker vs Kris-Ko , slamming down three hours of back to back tribal, tech and progressive bombs in a special CDJ vs Ableton Live DJ set. Expect a multitude of cheeky re-edits, effects, loops, acapellas, and more arm-swirling big tunes than can possibly be good for your elbows.
DROP is back, and its reputation as one of Brisbane’s most debaucherous nights of dirty tech, electro, tribal and progressive house sounds still remains unchallenged from its beginnings in 2003.
