In a truly rare music event for Sydney, two of the world’s foremost beat producers come together to play a special double bill show at Oxford Art Factory.

Taking on the name Peanut Butter Wolf in the late-80s when he realized that, in an odd turn of events, a girlfriend’s youngest brother feared the “peanut butter wolf monster” more than death itself. Wolf and his more conventionally-named counterpart, Charizma, began recording in 1989 when the two were still teenagers. Within three years, the duo signed a contract with Hollywood Basic (Disney) alongside label mates Organized Konfusion and DJ Shadow. Then, in December of 1993, Charizma tragically lost his life. Stunned, Wolf temporarily gave up on music.
After the release of Peanut Butter Breaks, PB Wolf found himself in demand as a producer. His track for the all-scratching compilation Return of the DJ was labeled “incredible” by The Source magazine.
In 1996, Peanut Butter Wolf founded Stones Throw Records. Charizma’s posthumous “My World Premiere” was the single to launch the label.
Lately, PB Wolf has moved away from producing (save the odd remix or compilation track) to build the Stones Throw label and to travel as a DJ to Europe, Japan, Australia, Canada, and across the US. Through his willingness to experiment and provide Stones Throw’s artists with musical carte blanche, he has overseen the releases of Lootpack’s Soundpieces, Quasimoto’s The Unseen, Breakestra’s Live Mix, Yesterdays New Quintet’s Angles Without Edges, Madlib’s Shades of Blue, and Jaylib’s Champion Sound.

BLACK GRASS – “A super talented man! A pure listening pleasure.” Laurent Garnier
Black Grass (Mex’s) career spans 20 years and during this time he has built up a reputation as one of the most talented but under-rated DJs. He was resident at the seminal Brighton night ‘Knowledge of Self’, then moved on to open for the likes of OC, Jurassic 5 and Big L whilst also producing the self-titled album ‘Black Grass’ in 2004, and then the critically-acclaimed follow up ‘A Hundred Days in One’ in 2006.
With a new album Black Grass is at the top of his game once again…
Catskills release the third album from Black Grass simply entitled ‘Three’.
The project of DJ/producer Mex, Black Grass involves a floating cast of guests including hip hop legend J-Live, vocalist Dionne Charles from funk sensations Baby Charles, Hearin’ Aid’s Aaron Phiri, reggae representation by Benjammin’ and Jah Marnyah, along with many more talented contributors.
With this being the third Black Grass album, according to Mex it mirrors another famous trilogy. “This album is my Return of the Jedi, whereas ‘A Hundred Days In One’ was my Empire Strikes Back and was quite dark, this is more fun with couple of Ewoks thrown for laughs. Rest assured I won’t be ruining it with a load of unnecessary CGI though.”
Among the guests on the album, J-Live stands out as a highlight. “The J-Live track came about by chance really. I heard he was playing in Brighton so I managed to hook up with him and we recorded the track the very next day”.
