Berghain’s best drop a compilation celebrating ten years of techno

Just over a decade ago, pioneering ‘90s techno club Ostgut shut its doors after being kicked out of its home in an abandoned Berlin warehouse, to make way for a big corporate sponsored arena. The next year, though, the team behind the club opened a new temple dedicated to techno in an old power plant; they called it Berghain, and used the name of their old club for their record label Ostgut Ton.

In the ten years since, Ostgut Ton has been a driving force for minimalist Berlin techno, dropping “92 12-inch EPs, 20 albums, 14 DJ mixes, seven Unterton releases, two compilations, one 7-inch single and one cassette,” by techno royalty from Marcel Dettmann to Cassy, Ben Klock, Luke Slater, Prosumer and many more.

To celebrate their ten year anniversary, the label’s releasing Ostgut Ton / Zehn on Friday 30 October with a special box set featuring ten 12-inch records and original artwork for each sleeve (you can also pick up the compilation as a digital package, or three-CD set with a booklet).

It’s not a “best of” release, though: Ostgut Ton is quick to point out that the 30 tracks featured are new, exclusive material looking (fittingly) to the future. ” Ostgut Ton / Zehn is not intended to be nostalgia, not a best of ten years, not a testament of Ostgut Ton’s past,” the label says. “It’s an adult statement of the label’s status quo as well as a glimpse of what’s forthcoming – at the end of a decade, on the brink of the future.”

That means new material from notable names like Marcel Dettmann, DVS1, Ben Klock and Steffi; you can listen to all of the tracks on the Ostgut Ton website, and if you’re lucky enough to be in Berlin on 31 October, the launch party is going down at Berghain.
