Apart from an unavoidable bottleneck at the entrance (and the bar running out of Red Bull, but that’s probably my fault), 360 was as smooth and well-organised as one would expect a Fuzzy party to be. No queueing for toilets, friendly low-key security, beanbags in the courtyard, cheap drinks, and a better line-up than most of the summer festivals. What more could a boy ask for?
After surrendering our illicit gum stash, we got through the gates just as Black Grass took the stage in the Funk Tent outside. The mix of old-skool hip-hop (Kurtis Blow, KRS-One, NWA), breaks and random funk and soul was a perfect start to the evening, even getting most of the wall-huggers up and dancing by the end of their set. By this stage I was tragically drunk (hooray for vodka and Red Bull) and was dragged inside by some less drunk friends to catch my beloved Freestylers doin their thang. After bitching and whining about the notable absence of said duo over summer, I jumped for joy when the line-up for 360 was announced, and babbled like an overexcited preschooler for the next month about how much I was looking forward to seeing them again. And of course, they brought the noise and left me a very happy camper indeed. I managed to yell and scream like a groupie, have a bit of a dance, and generally have a bloody good time. It was a given that they would give Push Up a spin, and the rapturous response from the crowd seemed to tell them they were doing something right. Considering JJJ have just picked it up (how much further behind the 8-ball can they get?) I think we will be hearing it for a while yet. Of course they marched out plenty of the new Raw as Fuck material, as well as a few ‘Stylers classics to keep us older folk happy.
After so many false starts over the past couple of years, Junior Jack and Kid Crème had a lot of expectation riding on their shoulders for their first ever appearance down under. While some people whinged about putting a house act in between breaks sets, I thought it was a masterstroke. A relaxed boogie to some top-flight house was just what the doctor ordered for me at least, and I’m sure plenty of people agreed judging by the crowd reaction. E Samba was a perfect start to a hour and a half of tasty electro-tinged house, and of course Thrill Me brought the house down.
Planet Funk. What can I say. To call them the highlight of the night would be an understatement. I went in kinda liking them, and walked out converted. They were truly one of the most exceptional live dance acts I have ever seen. I’m talking Groove Armada good. Again, I thought the soft/loud dynamics of the programming were perfect, slotting Planet Funk in after an upfront house set (Junior Jack and Kid Crème) was pure genius. All of a sudden the writhing sweaty mass came to a halt, and the floaty, early morning sounds of Planet Funk took over.
Chase the Sun live was absolutely jaw-dropping. The female vocalist was amazing, and supported by a flawless live band, made for a once in a lifetime live music experience. Or maybe twice in a lifetime, if you include the encore. The band jumped effortlessly between ethereal prog (Chase the Sun) and rockier stuff (Who Said, The Switch), but throughout there was the distinct feel that we were a lucky 5 thousand people seeing a group at their peak. Im listening to the album as I write this, and I’m still getting shivers!
Moguai hit hard early, breaking out the big tunes to get the energy level up again. Of course the behemoth that is U Know Y nearly blew the roof off, and things continued in a similarly dirty electro vein until I was dragged out at about 5:30am.
Being a big fan of their production work I was disappointed to have missed Aquasky vs Masterblaster, and by all acounts they were excellent, finishing with a d’n’b encore.
The 360 crowd was an intriguing mix of Fuzzy beautiful people, and the kind of clubbers more accustomed to sweaty all-nighters than parading around the Domain on New Years Day. Fuzzy managed to put together a line-up that not only had something for everyone, but suited the venue down to the ground. It was an absolute joy to be back at the Hordern, and I dearly hope 360 was the first of many.
