OeP and Trafik joined forces to bring to the punters of Perth a night with a difference; Young Guns: A night full of showcasing the freshest and newest DJ talent in our fine city. The upstairs bar at Heat played host to the OeP young guns which saw some of those on the bill, playing out for their first time. The DJ’s were paired up and given an hour to fill the intimate room with their choice of tunes. What entailed was a night full of quality trance in all of its forms, with the up and coming DJ’s displaying just how good the talent in Perth really is.

First up on the decks were Slade and Neil Bamber who delivered a very tidy set of house and breaks of the progressive kind. Many quality tunes were dropped throughout their set including Nubreed – One Day. Slade’s sharp cuts on the mixer and use of effects enhanced the set and injected some techy influences into the progressively based set. This set was characterized by quality tunes, tight mixes and a rhythmical flow far more advanced than what you would expect from up and comers.

Following on from this quality set were DJ’s Kronik and Tak who kept on this lower key proggy trance level for a while before moving out to the higher more uplifting sounds of trance. Amongst some of the good tunes dropped by these two were Portishead – Roads (Sultan Mix) and Rob Dougan – Clubbed to Death (Hybrid Mix). Towards the end of their set, the duo lost the more uplifting feel and headed out with a harder edge dropping Tiesto – Traffic and ending up with the Dougan track.

DJV and Jonas were up next and delivered a solid set of driving to uplifting trance. DJV dropped the first tune which was Envio – Time to Say Goodbye. From there the boys shifted quite seamlessly between taking things very uplifting with tunes like Agnelli and Nelson – Holding onto Nothing and Jono Grant vs Mike Koglin – Circuits to a more driving almost techy pace with tunes like Mojado feat. Mr. Sam – Naranja. Their set flowed well with some good mixes, particularly by DJV who was playing out for the first time which was quite a surprise considering his skills. By this stage, the dance floor was quite full and the room in general had filled quite considerably. It was a good turn out for the up and comers to be playing to.

DJ’s Miller and Cheffy followed on from the previous two and Miller was up first dropping some tech trance bombs which saw the dance floor quickly fill again. Miller’s tight mixing and nice work using the EQ’s and cuts added to the techy tunes much to the approval of those present. Cheffy leaned more towards the driving and uplifting forms of trance. The two DJ’s playing contrasting styles of the same genre worked well together and created a very quality set which was characterized with some notably smooth mixes and good use of the mixer. Towards the end of their set, the boys dropped Tiesto’s rocking reworking of the classic Barbers Adagio for Strings and Chemical Brothers – Under the Influence which got many in the room reacquainted with the dance floor. The duo unleashed a very nice set with some tight mixes and many good tunes, definitely a top set delivered by these two DJ’s.

Brooksy and Breeze then took to the decks and introduced a more uplifting sounding set which was full of sweeping synths and uplifting melodic riffs. Brooksy’s smooth mixes and quality tune choices enhanced the set and accompanied with Breeze’s mixing ability, made for a nice final set by the up and comers for the night. Highlight tunes of their set included Mark Norman – Rush, Vascotia – Calibro and Rapid Eye – Santa Cruz.

Jon Noonan and Lanithium then took control of the speakers and dropped a killer set full of the most upfront and rocking trance out there. Although not exactly classed as up and comers now with both of their recent successes around town and even beyond, these boys have only been playing for a short while so were still on the bill to play. Noonan started out on a solely tech trance note dropping Age of Love – Age of Love (Marco V Mix) which set the scene perfectly for the quality set that was to follow. Lanithium then dropped Randy Katana – In Silence (Txitxarro Mix) which provided the perfect follow up to the previous tune and kept the beats nicely aligned to the techy trance note. As always, every mix by these DJ’s was flawless and their set overall flowed and worked so well which is an indication of the high level of professionalism and skill they both attain. Noonan dropped the very great techno tune Tomaz vs Filterheadz – Sunshine which went down a treat with the predominantly trance loving room and Lanithium dropping MK-S vs Robert Nickson – Fallback also rocked those that were still present to hear this blinder of a set.

TrainwreckaH then came on and played the final tune of the night which was a nice surprise for those still there. It was Cupa – Untitled and is the latest track produced by renowned trance producer GTR under the Cupa guise. As it has not been released yet, those still there were treated with the exclusiveness of hearing it played for the first time. Judging from the reaction of those in the room, the tune was well received with its melodic, uplifting yet unique production values, very trademark of any of GTR’s productions.

A top night out with the best trance played by some of Perth’s newest up and coming DJ’s. Their mixing was impressive and their tunes were rocking. I’m sure we are going to be hearing a lot more from these DJ’s around town in the near future.
