For this reviewer, who has been to some of the best clubs around, I admittedly was not relishing having to review a night at The World. The pull for me was pure and simply the Hed Kandi name. As a pommy the Hed Kandi brand is infamous with quality sexy house and has a major influence over the dance scene in the UK and Europe. So to be given a teaser for a Hed Kandi set in Sydney the venue was the last thing on my mind.
The World has always been firmly embedded in my head as a backpacker watering hole (from my days as a backpacker!) I had heard the venue no longer attracted that drunken crowd, and from the moment I walked through the door I was greeted by the friendly door staff and management, so memories of the past well and truly stayed there. I reckon they have to be one of the nicest teams in the business. The place looks fantastic and the backpacker element has long gone being replaced by a vibrant funky crowd.
The overhaul is impressive and has obviously been well received as on arrival around 11pm the place was pumping to the sounds of the Double D show. I have never come across these three guys before; one on the decks and the other two comprising a mixture of MC, keyboards and guitar, accompanying funky house tunes. These guys were absolutely fantastic, combining live music with some full on booty shaking tunes (“I like the way you move”, Body Rockers for example) – I soon found myself up dancing on the chairs with everyone else.
The Double D show rocked Sumo Sonic for a full three hours and I was there until the last track had played. The guys can be found most weeks at The World and for those of you who want high energy entertainers I would recommend these guys time and time again! I was so far not disappointed with what The World was offering. With a big line up it can be really difficult being in two places at once, and the front room was in such a good vibe I had to remind myself of the reason for doing this review – Hed Kandi!
Having just returned from a Hed Kandi weekender in London I was eager to see what Sydney’s own Hed Kandi man Jack McCord, featuring live PA Gerrie Malla, could offer. Jack’s seamless style was faultless and kept the vibe electric in the Main Room throughout his set with the crowd and him beaming back at each other. You just know when a DJ is having fun, and the crowd certainly couldn’t stop dancing. As for Gerrie, Jack has certainly found a little diamond there, she has an amazing big voice and I for one would have liked to have heard more.
Jack played some pretty funky tunes as ever in the Hed Kandi style and in the hope of enlightening others to see the way a raft of sampler CDs were handed over to the crowd. Free stuff to adoring punters is always a bonus! Hed Kandi never fails to impress with its strong branding, funky tunes and top DJ talent on offer. For those of you who didn’t make it this time round to The World you need to get your sweet little arses down to the beat of Hed Kandi before Jack leaves for the UK to promote yet another one of his latest singles to be released.
For someone who was unsure, but open minded, about The World and the quality it could offer to punters, my mates and I had a fantastic night and will always love Hed Kandi with its happy uplifting house leaving you wanting more. Here’s hoping we get a full on Hed Kandi tour over the summer?!
