Sounds on Boxing Day @ Greenwood Hotel, Sydney (26/12/05)

Created On January 4th, 2006 by Chewporka

As Christmas activities come to a close they open the gate to a fantastic period of the year where almost everyone has holidays and partying is the name of the game. Boxing Day seems to signify the start of this period and what better way to kick it off than to head to one of Sydney’s favourite outdoor venues the Greenwood Hotel for Sounds on Sunday. This year they opted out of having any touring internationals playing and billed a stack of local talent to rock through the afternoon. DJs playing on the day were: Toby Neal and Alex Mac, Trix & Goodfella, John Wall and Tim Sea, Dr MC Fro and the Pain Relief, Diggs & Stama, Liquid M vs Archie, and many more.

We got into the event relatively early passing by a short line and heading straight to the bar (as one does as Sounds on Sunday). Once armed with beers we settled some of the groovy tunes on offer in the courtyard from Toby Neal and Alex Mac who already had everyone grooving along to the smooth funky beats. They played a good mixture of lazy house tunes and bouncy four to the floor garage tinged tunes which went down perfectly as the crowd built in the courtyard area.

Soon we moved inside to check out some of the quality progressive, melodic and uplifting tunes on offer in the Chapel from two of Sydney’s favourite trance lads: Diggs vs Stama. This duo punched out a stack of quality progressive tunes earlier on in their set and slowly built the sound up throughout their set ending in a number of fresh new tracks and some classics thrown in for good measure. Some of the tracks they laid down included: a remix of Group Therapy Feat Nat Leonard – My Own Worst Enemy, Alter Ego – Rocker (crowd favourite), Thrillseekers – Synaestasia and the new Point One – Spunk.

Next up Liquid M v Archie continued on from delving off immediately into the hard trance realm with some hard but quality tunes which seemed to be going down well with the more energetic Sounds on Sunday crowd. Meanwhile outside Trix and Goodfella had been smashing through a heap of quality bass heavy electro grazed house, including my current favourite Freeform Five – No More Conversations (Mylo Remix). Outside the crowd was really starting to get into the spirit as the evening atmosphere started to set in as the sun went down. As the evening rolled on John Wall and Tim Sea continued pumping out quality tunes in the courtyard and we missed the closing set by Dr MC Fro and the Pain Relief which sounds like it would have been interesting to say the least.

All in all, it was a great day out and perfect way to spend Boxing Day after the busy Christmas period where eating and family outings took the limelight. Sounds on Sunday is still going strong and will no doubt provide the perfect venue for punters to spend a relaxed Sunday afternoon grooving along to some quality tunes, whatever your persuasion: breaks, house, electro, trance or harder stuff. Make sure to check it out over summer while the weather is still perfect!
