The Oneday crew celebrated their first birthday last Sunday, and the beautiful people came out to play at The Argyle in The Rocks. I was a little worried for the event organizers when I rolled in at 1pm with a total of around 10 people scattered around the place. But I should have used my head really: a beautiful 30 degree temperature had all the party people outside getting tans at their local beach, before they hit the city with a vengeance. And with a line up that included the Bag Raiders, John Glover and Andy Van, there was no chance they’d be missing this!
And I was right… When 3pm rolled around, I saw a full crowd of people strutting through the door and all were in a celebratory mood. They had their sunnies on and a newly acquired tan to show off and no one moved from the courtyard for a few hours. Some great beats were pumping from the side room and the general atmosphere was light and happy. Now if there is a major gripe to be had, I really hate it when there is no set times posted up somewhere in the venue – especially when you have more than one area, stage or room going. What made matters a little more annoying is when I actually did ask around for it from staff, it was a drama getting any answer.
Gripe over… I was still having a ball and The Argyle looks great since the new renovations were completed. The downstairs lounge area has some funky booths to hide away in, and the general ambience of the place is quite classy. Having a chat to some friends and sipping on a couple of cocktails was Sunday afternoon bliss.
Moving upstairs to have a boogie we were confronted by a fairly agro bouncer who promptly told up that it was a VIP area. No worries, we’ll move to the sideroom… No, that was a VIP area also… OK, so moving to the back of the venue we finally found a spot we were allowed into and had a great time jumping around to Brenden Fing, Anyo and Tenzin.
Much to my dismay however, the fun seemed to stop here. As people started to filter out about 9pm (poor kiddies – it was a school night after all), it became fairly obvious that there were more people in the VIP room than out on the main floor. Looking back I am sure this created a little resentment somewhat among the general party people. Perhaps condensing everyone into the one area would have been a smarter move, and it would have kept the atmosphere in tact for the remainder of the evening.
All in all, Oneday was a fun afternoon out. The music was incredible and the atmosphere was electric, if only for a few hours. I reckon that a smaller venue or a less obvious VIP area would gain you an even better result next time guys and I truly don’t see this party going anywhere else but up!
