Logic vs. Subtrakt feat. Jamie Stevens @ Bar Soma, Brisbane (09/05/08)

In keeping with the ongoing level of co-operation within the Brissie dance music community, church bells were ringing for the marriage of underground house music events Logic and Subtrakt, who pooled all the right resources to deliver an evening of (expected) quality tuneage courtesy of the usual local suspects and the hotly anticipated Jamie Stevens. The Dieb Audio label boss and member of Infusion made short work of bettering the already well spoken of appearance he made at the Empire Hotel last year (also at a Logic event) by playing a broad spectrum of lush house and techno music.

The difficult to warm up but beautifully intimate surrounds of Bar Soma was first placed into the capable hands of Mike Redfern and Rikki Newton, whose appreciation of deep house was both enjoyable and effective on the dancefloor. Fergus Alexander and BPM likewise need little introduction, yet this was the first night for both of them to be playing back to back with BPM manning the laptop for a little bit of Ableton fun. As with the set before there was a definite symmetry of sound that produced lashings of deep, progressive and occasionally acid driven house music with some funkier stuff occasionally brought into the mix. M.A.N.D.Y’s well appreciated remix of Damage from Tiefschwarz got proceeding well underway as much as the epic Rasmus Faber remix of I’m In Love from Studio Apartment.

With all as it ought to be for the star appearance, Jamie Stevens lifted the energy of an enthusiastic crowd which was well in the mood for some tasty offerings. A couple of disagreements with an errant CDJ didn’t diminish enthusiasm for the offering. Stevens’ cheeky mashup of Underworld’s Cowgirl and Gabriel Ananda’s Doppelwhipper proved that the combination of two massive tunes can work without being distastefully cheesy, whilst Revolution 909 evoked December memories and DJ Yellow’s Unreleased Track pulled some heart strings with it’s emotive melodies. Plenty of chunky bassline and Plastikman esque drums occupied the in-between as a reminder to the forgetful what the night was all about.

Both Logic and Subtrakt nights are rarely a disappointment, and this was yet another to keep score.
