Do you remember your first time? You know the feeling, a little anxious, a little nervous, a little excited all at once. Well that’s what the crew from Platform would have been feeling and then some, leading up to their first T-Party.
With what seems to be an explosion of ‘tech’ parties in the last few months and even in the more recent weeks, this was to be a test of not only a relatively newcomer to the very tight knit techno community, but a test of the current strength of the techno scene in Melbourne that was once dubbed ‘Techno City’. Could ol’ M-town sustain another weekend of techno onslaught?
Now if you haven’t been to Eurotrash bar before, it’s hidden up China Town way just round the corner from another old school techno haunt from back in the day the ‘Cage’. Anyone expecting ‘Cage’ like quality would have been pleasantly surprised with a modern slightly left alternative décor perfectly suited to a mad T-Party. Arriving around 9:30pm‘ish I met up with the two head honchos from Platform, Mel and Andrea and got their take on where they would like to see T-party go to. Firstly I was explained the concept behind T-Party, it’s quite simple yet makes a whole lot of sense.
“Like a cup of tea and as with many things in life there are many varieties and flavours, and this is how the T-Party concept came about. Wanting to give people the opportunity to hear all varieties and flavours of techno.” Add to that a dash of influence from the (in)famous British T-parties and a sprinkle of O.G. Mad Hatter (yep the one from Alice) and you got your self an interesting party recipe there.
By the time I had got acclimatise I had missed Virginia Le’s set and only caught the last few tunes from QLD import Double Accident changing over to miss Danny B busting out some smooth rolling sounds then catching me off guard about mid set by toughening things up a whole lot more. Up next was the lovely and awesome Rachel Orchard laying down some nice dark driving beats with crazy soundscapes and melodic overtones and some nice layered mixing building up perfectly for man about town Matt Radovich.
With out fail Matty did not disappoint, from the early stages of his set he had the by now full Eurotrash rockin’ on from what was already an excellent vibe and flow built upon by all the previous DJs, building things up and hitting, you guessed it full on classic AKA ‘fucking Techno’ banging it out till near the end of his set where things got a little groovier.
To close out the nights proceedings was non other than Technoir stalwart Ranjit Nijjer, dropping some damn right funky ass tuneage , turning the whole place in to his own dirty disco-tech with a still full Eurotrash going strong . Even as the night began to draw to a close and the lights came up there was still a multitude of people on the floor hanging for their last beat. But all good things must come to the end at which Ranjit’s last tune ended
Through out the night I managed to meet quite a few fellow ITMers in the flesh for the first time and there also seemed to be a lot of new techno converts after the night’s proceedings, with a few people mentioning they’d not really been that much into techno before, but this had certainly changed their minds and musical taste.
A great friendly crowd, staff and security across the board: for those who missed out this time, well you really missed out on a top night so make sure you keep your eyes ears and tastes buds in search for the next T-Party. Another top hit for techno!
