With the exception of the Beach Road Hotel, it’s been hard to find a proper club night that offers good quality live hip hop close to the city. So a couple of weeks ago I was very happy to see the Sosueme crew had billed Spit Syndicate to headline their weekly Friday night party at Qbar. That turned out to be one of the best nights I had enjoyed out at a club in a while, and Sosueme continues to impress by providing a great mix of DJs and live entertainment in the middle of the city. It fills a niche, and provides a different experience from what’s on offer form other club nights.
The hip hop heads aren’t the only ones catered for at Sosueme, offering something for everyone over the course of a night. Apart from the impressive line ups each week, Sosueme has itself a great venue in the form of QBar. I hadn’t been for quite some time before the Spit Syndicate, gig and I’d forgotten why I liked going there so much. In the main bar a couple of pool tables and comfortable cushioned booths make for quite a laidback atmosphere, compared to the intensity of other clubs nearby in the city. It’s never to hard to get a round at the bar and you don’t need to scream in order to communicate with the person next to you whatever pearls of hilarious wisdom you’re laying down after three or four drinks. The main performance rooms are reasonably small but can fit a surprising amount of people into them, leaving you very close to whoever is performing which makes for a very intimate show.
This Friday’s line up included Mailer Daemon, Free Agent Crew, 2onajoyride, Elaine Benes, Horrorshow and Simon Subsonic from London’s club NME just to name a few… I said there was something for everyone, right? And although it may still be three months until we’re popping the corks, pashing a random stranger and scream out “happy new year!”, I feel safe in saying Horrorshow have released what will be my favorite album of this year in the form of The Grey Space out through Elefant Traks. So on the night I was looking forward to seeing the talented duo, which consists of MC Solo and producer Adit, more than anyone else on the eclectic lineup. Horrorshow took to the stage around 11:30pm and played for about an hour, treating us to most of the songs from the album. I have seen these boys perform a number of times now and the set continues to get tighter and tighter. Solo’s skills on the mic can not be argued with and Adit never misses a beat. If you have even the slightest interest in hip hop or just like great music I highly recommend you throw down that Playstation controller and get out and see these guys. Horrorshow are playing a lot of local shows in the next few weeks so no excuses people!
After Horrorshow’s killer set I checked out a couple more acts on and off throughout the night, and again really enjoyed that I saw. Sosueme are doing a fantastic job of booking local up and comers at the moment, giving you a great chance to get out and see a lot of your future favorite acts before they get too big and you’re no longer paying a very reasonable $10 to see them. As I mentioned the small performance rooms make for intimate shows that will inevitably be lacking when these acts blow up big. Sosueme happens every Friday from around 8pm at Qbar on Oxford Street. Get down there and check it out!
