Deep, jazz inspired house and masterful production is what people have come to expect from Henrik Schwarz.

With notable songs such as Walk Music, the remix of Kuniyuki Takahasi’s African Sky and the incredible collaboration with Dixon and Ame, which produced the D.P.O.M.B EP, the Melbourne audience was prepared for a night of soulful sounds.

Gilbert Cohen of Chateau Flight and co-owner of the seminal Versatile Records, was also billed, along with Melbourne’s very own Christian Vance, who himself had released a remix EP for Etienne Jaumet on Versatile earlier this year.

Roxanne Parlour, located down a back alley in the CBD of Melbourne, provided an intimate environment. The venue’s only access is via an elevator to the top floor. The DJ booth was lit by a curtain backdrop of small L.E.D lights, changing colour and pattern with the movement of the music. Sound quality was especially good and VJ Netzair provided stunning visuals throughout the evening.

The venue was full of music lovers and industry gurus, all there to celebrate the prestigious Soma Corp’s 6th Blow Your Own Way birthday. Soma Corp has been a driving force of quality acts in Melbourne and since it’s inception in 2003 has toured acts such as Aril Brihka, Vince Watson, Joris Voorn, Kenny Larkin, Robert Babicz and Ripperton.

What Schwarz delivered was easily the best live set and performance seen in Melbourne all year. For all his incredible laid back productions, he played the most enthusiastic and high energy set in recent memory.

From word go, the quality of his live set was clear. Beginning with a lingering soundscape and dropping into an enormous groove, the crowd roared its approval and all were dancing.

The set was full of jazzy trumpets and piano hooks, squelching synthesisers, amazing bass lines and heaving drums. Toward the end of the set, the devastating D.P.O.M.B. brought a degree of mayhem to the dance floor. The crowd was also lucky enough to hear his still-unreleased Michael Jackson remix, which is rumoured to come out on legendary MoTown records.

Following Schwarz, Gilbert Cohen played a blend of deeper beats and all types of house, with that subtle French sound that Chateau Flight are so well known for. Very much a journey through different sounds, executed with a great deal of class and sophistication.

Finishing off the night, Christian Vance played an amazing live set. His sound complemented the preceding acts perfectly and kept everyone partying until the early hours.

The sound, the venue, the crowd and the acts made it overall a special night.
