I don’t think I’ve ever been blown away with so much talent in one hit.
If your preference in flavour is old skool hip-hop, funk, disco, a massive amount of mash up with a hint of drum and bass and some seriously crazy scratching on the decks then Regrooved should be permanently branded into your agenda.
In conjunction with Good Groove records, Regrooved is their new event with shows running in UK, Canada, Brazil, Italy, Ibiza, Melbourne, Perth, & New Zealand. On their first tour in Sydney, Regrooved brought an impressive line up of DJ’s and producers who all put on a striking show for the crowd.
Melt bar was the perfect venue for the night. Its graffiti inspired walls, stencils of classic movie stars, records lining the ceiling and let’s not forget the disco balls provided a charming and inviting space with a retro feel – complimentary to the beats dropped at Regrooved.
The night kicked off with Australian DJ and promoter of the night, DJ Paul Master. A regular mixer at Fringe Bar and The Bank, Paul Master has had 10 years of experience on the decks up his sleeve and is best known for his skill fusing jazz, funk and breaks. His mixing style was chilled out, the ideal kind of musical appetiser of a crazy night like Regrooved. Starting with a laid back remix reggae influenced track Tape Loops – Milk and Honey (Featurecast Remix), Paul Master didn’t hold back on quickly raising the funk by dropping the retro groove of A. Skillz – Twang Banger.
Next on the desk was Newcastle boy DJ Mathmatics, part of the Robotek hip-hop crew. Rocking his b-boy style, Mathmatics style had a real old school inspired vibe. He initially dropped Jurassic 5’s big band influenced track Set Swing and unexpectedly was able to craftily mix in Fred Astaire – Puttin’ On the Ritz. The crowd were swinging to the classic feel of the beats and Mathmatics even got down off the decks briefly to showcase some of his impressive break-dancing skills.
Qdup was Regrooved international act flown straight from Los Angeles. As part of the Qdup Foundation whose sound is dedicated to playing only the funkiest and freshest beats on the dancefloor, Qdup proved to live up to their promise. As an accomplished producer, his set was filled with disco inspired bass slaps and packed with James Brown inspired vocals.
The most unlikely looking kid of the line up, Slynk stepped up to drop his set and there’s no doubt in my mind that he blew everyone away with his talent on the decks. Having done mixes for Ministry of Sound, Slynk is one of Brisbane’s upcoming DJ’s you’ve got to watch out for. His style oozed with classic hip-hop, spiced up with funk and jazz laced with tributes to hip-hop from the early 2000’s such as Eve and Stefani – Blow your Mind. His scratching was what sent the crowd wild. I’d never witnessed anyone scratch on the decks so fast, without any stuff ups and with so much ease.
The last DJ rounding up the incredible talent witnessed was D Funk. Brittish born mixer and producer now residing in Sydney, D Funk ended the night with a last hard hit of funk, keeping the crowd on their feet with the groovy beats of Nick Thayer & Ali B’s – NE Way.
At the end of the night I managed to catch up with DJ and Promoter of Regrooved, Paul Master regarding his future directions for the event. “I have a couple of internationals coming over the next six months from Canada, the US and the UK”, he said. With gigs planned once every two months in Sydney, it seems as though Regrooved is destined to continue its success and become a bigger part of the Sydney clubbing scene.
