First he won the Nescafe Big Break, Then it was the Nokia Connecting Beats competition. Now Glenn Rogers aka Blueprint is one of very Lucky Locals that are on the Bill for the Nokia Terminal 9 Tour, We catch up with Glenn for a quick chat before his hectic schedule hits overdrive.
Glenn has had a massive 2005 and its only getting bigger, anyway lets find out exactly whats instore for this minnow come megastar.
Straight into the big questions Glenn, How are you feeling about the upcoming Nokia Teminal 9 tour?
Can’t wait, it will be the first time I get to take the live show to Brisbane and Sydney, and the first time here at the Forum in Melbourne. The Nokia guys have done and awesome job of the lineup this year, look forward to seeing guys like Loose Cannons and Pepe Deluxe, mixmaster mike tore it up when he was here earlier this year, no doubt he’ll do it again this time round.
With Acts as fine as Mix Master Mike & Pepe Deluxe on the Nokia Terminal 9 tour do you feel a certain type of pressure to well basically play a rippin set? Or are you able to relax and play it like any other gig?
In a way you feel like there’s less pressure and more opportunity to prove yourself. You find most punters are paying their $40 to see the international headliners, so if you go out there and play a great set then it’s a bonus. And if it all goes bad, well at least there’s the internationals!
Winning the 2005 Nokia Connecting Beats comp was a huge accomplishment, how has this benefited your career?
It’s been amazing, it’s been a great comp, I was lucky to be a part of the finals last year, and it’s great that the people involved are passionate about the scene and genuinely interested in supporting unsigned artists. Getting the opportunity to play in the T9 tour has provided great national exposure and to hit up the Fingerlickin’ guys in the UK will be a dream, hopefully open up some opportunities over in the UK.
You have a 12” scheaduled for release this year, can you fill us in on that little beauty?
Looking forward to getting this one out, I finished mastering the 12” on the weekend with EK, it’s a two track 12” – What Kind of Friend? and With You Awake, which should be out around November through Sound Not Scene.
Any other release’s / remixes coming out this year?
There will be a track on the upcoming Forefront II compilation which should be out around October, and looks to be a corker, a double CD of all local aussie artists, so look out for that one and support Aussie breaks!
Glenn you have played alongside some fairly big names from the Beats genre such as Plump DJ’s, Deejay Punk, B.L.I.M. , Tayo, Future Funk Squad and many more got a favourite story or memory from any of those gigs?
Deejay Punk Roc was a classic, the guy has been in the scene forever and he still manages to put on an awesome show. At one stage he had the mic in one hand mc’ing, and was scratching with the other, a true entertainer!
Glenn you lucky bugger you also won the Nescafe Big Break way back in 2000, you won the Dance section right?, how did you end up spending that prize money and did winning give your music career a boost along?
I was lucky at the time because the tracks I was producing then were fairly rubbish looking back at it. I ended up using the money to buy some studio monitors, so hopefully they’ve helped improve those mixes!
When and what got you into the Music Industry?
I learnt keyboard when I was younger, which got me into synths and sound creation, then around 2000 there was a night started by a guy called Neil Goulding called the Fresh Sessions, which got together a lot of Melbourne producers for a night to play out there own tunes and trade ideas, some great artists came out of it, Seratone, Statik, Paul Kearney – Phil K played one of the earlier gigs, and it was a great leg up when it was very hard for live acts to get gigs in Melbourne.
What equipment do you use at home?, and at a live show?
I write mostly on the PC these days, but I still have a few hardware synths and samplers, I still find it a more creative process when you can twist knobs and play physical instruments. When I play live I bring along a couple of the synths, samplers and a laptop, I also have a live drummer and singer that join me. I’m trying to add as many live elements as possible, which keeps things interesting and ensures there’s plenty more risk of things going wrong!
For the people living under rocks Glenn, Where can we see you (Blueprint) play on a weekly basis?
I usually play monthly at Brown Alley in Melbourne with the Beats Working crew, it’s a great night put on by a great bunch of guys, look forward to getting back there soon! I’ve also finally got round to updating my website with dates at www.blueprintmusic.com.au
Any plans to travel oversea’s say the U.K where the scene is a little stronger?
I think we’re pretty lucky with the breaks scene we have here in Australia, there’s guys here like EK, Bass Kleph, Nick Thayer, Dopamine all doing great things over in the UK, there’s a good reason why guys like Soul of Man and Freq Nasty are here every year! I think it certainly helps to be over there where the labels are, but there’s still a bit I want to achieve here first.
Finally what are your’e 5 Favourite Tracks at the moment?
Smells like Naples – Madox
Here – Karton
The Rub Off – Plump DJ’s
Just One More – Atomic Hooligan
PMT – Gyromancer – Stanton Warriors Mix
Thanks again Glenn aka Blueprint for giving us his time and be sure to check him out on the Nokia Terminal 9 tour.
