love "the tree" and the "urfuct independence day light beam" on the last page

couple shots while walking off a bunch of snag sangers up the coast. was nice and storm cloudy earlier in the day but by the time we got to the beach it was blown out and hazy as ): caught the last bit of interesting cloud....

actually shot these in raw, didnt exactly help the shots but didnt really do any more adjusting than i normally wouldve (apart from having to heal about 30% of the sky thanks to the 100s and 1000s sprinkled generously over my sensor :S )

Managed to drag myself out of bed for the first time in ages. Fairly average sky unfortunately so focused on the pool itself. Fairly average overall result truth be told, nevermind

I feel a bit of a twat posting this in a photography forum as I am at the first step of what I think will be a real interest in photography. Not only has this photo been untouched but it is also *deep breath* a fully auto shot... will this get me thrashed and chased out with lens fluffers?

Anyway I do love this picture because of the variety of objects in motion - the Australian Pelican, the Little Raven, the huge container ship, the boat and the Seagull...

hey, it's a fucking start eh?

Indeed it is!
Have you tried cropping in to a 16:9 aspect? Bottom edge midway through the rocks.

The foreground is distracting, to me. Atleast halfway up the rocks there is solid shapes to line the frame.

Otherwise cool

Nice one!

I'm with Hemi on the crop comment - for me I feel the whole point of this pic is the pelican in flight, yet I find my eyes being drawn down to the rocks in the foreground

I think a crop with less sky and less rocks (that 16:9 thing Hemerage spoke about) would do this shot wonders

Thanks Hemerage and Skerik; you're dead right. I have had a bit of a tinker with it and cropped it to 16:9. I've probably overdone the edging but for some reason when it was cropped it really reminded me of 70's enamel trays!

Another one that I like to call.... "Pelican 2"

i'd love to go there, big shots everywhere it seems!

A slightly wonky shot of Townsville from the side of a very windy Castle Hill - I had wandered off track to get the shot i wanted and it started to get pretty dark quickly, couldn't see where I was going and all my torches were back at home

Almost slipped a few times and plummeted to my death. It's quite a way down...

This is probably the clearest shot i got, the wind was blowing me, camera, tripod, strap, and everything around hardcore and i couldn't wait to get out of there before i died.

It's wonky, and i don't care - a reminder to myself not to do that sort of shit too much...

And one from the other side of the hill. From the path - the staircase in fact, being good and not tempting the fates

It is truly mind boggling. My recommendation is that if you want to take great photos, do a hike/overnight stay. That way you can scope out more vantage points and have time to compose. This goes for Zion as well. Great place but the good photo points are hidden and accessed only by hiking.

Another one from my trip

The Three Patriarchs, Zion National Park by Donny Dino, on Flickr

This was the view outside my bathroom window (Bellagio) - handheld so chunky ISO, but was more interested in what was in the bath at the time

^^ I'd love to see some long exposures of that spot at night, reckon the cars + that nice curve would net some mad results

Here's a pic of Sam Stickman (a new friend I've started to do some portrait work with) admiring the landscape out of the hotel window

I told him not to stand on the bed, but he wouldn't listen...

Managed to score a 94.5 on 500px with this shot - i normally rate between 20 and 60!

Thanks. Unfortunately my camera is a fixed lens but does get some pretty good results. It's a Panasonic FZ150. I'm really bloody happy with it as an entry to learning about photography.

A Red Wattlebird in the same tree..

and on Sunday - a Brown Falcon whilst out spotting. There was a bit of glare so I didn't get a really tight focus which is a bit of a let down.

^^ Nice

Noob question for you (just trying to learn the art of landscapes).... with a long exposure like this one, how do you keep the moving elements in focus... I am talking for example about the guy in the water in the foreground. Is this just a post-processing thing?

The camera settings won't scratch the surface as to what you can do in post.
