The Dave Seaman ones Beunos Aries and Cape Town are up there with my fave mix CD's of all time.

Digweed's Hong Kong and Warrens Amsterdam and the two Sasha ones are classics as well

For me it would have to be Digweed Los Angeles and Sasha Ibiza but there are so many good ones. James Lavelle Barcelona still gets regular plays.

First Deep Dish one has a very special place in my heart, too...I was quite late finding GU/progressive, was to avidly into techno and trance for ages...first one I heard was Emerson's first offering, 15, which I still fucking love!

Yes Deep Dish - GU021: Moscow is un-fuckin-believable. Amazing choonage. Second best for me is Danny Tenaglia ‎- GU010: Athens, outstanding.

That spot is so brilliantly timed, just as the Alergria hits it's last use of the lyrics BAM right where the first "Voooooiiicccccceeeeesssss" drops...magic! Guessing it was probably all done on computer so finding that mix point wouldn't have been hard, but still, sound awesome!

All about Sasha San Franciso for me. The gateway comp for me into all things prog and one that I heavily obsessed over. Bar maybe 5 tracks (DJ Tomcraft - The Mission especially...does anyone have that on vinyl?) I managed to hunt down all the vinyl that was featured on that comp!

I remember trying to find the original version of Dave Kane - Clarkness (on Plastic Fantastic records) and I went to Plastic Fantastic store in Covent Garden (circa 2001) and asked them if that ever got released as there was a remix floating around on vinyl at that stage without the original. The sales man told me that it was all deleted and it would be impossible to find another one unless 2nd hand. In floats the other sales man form the back who overheard his partner and handed me a copy saying that that was the last fresh copy on planet earth which he found cleaning up their store room maybe 10 min before I entered the store.

Stalwart of the Global Underground DJ contingent, Nick Warren returns to the series following the huge success of his "Paris" CD in 2007.

Selecting the Peruvian capital Lima for his latest installment in the legendary GU city series, Warren complies an entirely exclusive track list to capture the sound and ambience of this historic former Incan city.

Based around the Global Underground party captured in the album’s beautiful stylized artwork, the GU Lima mix is a sonic missile – simpe, direct, and deadly.


There is a definite cosmopolitan futurism about it akin with the city itself– a track called ‘The Castillian’ melting into one called ‘Siberian Transit’, being a case in point...


Beginning quietly with Paul Roger’s ambient ethereal intro CD1 quickly plunges into the awkward bleepy techno of Nils Nuerenberg’s ‘Seduction’ taking the album to an immediate high. The creepy girlish laughter that seeps into the pulsing house groove of Kruse and Nuernberg’s ‘An Why E’ brings an edge of menace to otherwise beautiful melodies, as Jarius Miller’s ‘Botnet’ continues the trip with bleeps and bloops that land from outer space. Culminating in the ghostly finale of 16 Bit Lolitas mix of Astrid Suryanto’s grandiose ‘Distant Bar’, CD1 sets a tone that continues prompting the question, could this be Nick’s most cohesive Global Underground mix to date?


CD2 begins with Alex Dolby’s ‘Long Beach’, a track that drops a funky string refrain onto twisting electronic flutters. The squelchy minimalist bounce of Chris Croat Yvel & Tristan’s ‘Panama’ backs up with Nicolo Vivarelli’s ‘I Am Trying’, haunted by distant radio voices edging nervously in and out of a disco bassline. Thomas Sagstad’s ‘Castillian’ builds energy with its relentless string refrain with twanging Spanish guitar flourishes, while a flurry of vocals arrive on the The Steals vs. Grafiti’s ‘Sinner’ (Leama and James Davis 'Grafiti' Mix) with its echoing, poppy vocals floating on stuttering rhythms, lush chords and electronic squeals that slowly spiral upwards. Warren brings out some big guns for the finale. Analogue People In A Digital World’s ‘Before The Wind’ drives its relentless groove home, occasionally lighting up with brief, bright flashes of melody. The closing Perc’s ‘Bosworth’ has the only big breakdown on the album and is soon back to a luscious, yet minimal groove... another no nonsense underground burner from an album that is full of them.

You’d be hard pushed to find many long-standing figures in global dance music that are as passionate about what they do and who still do it for those much lauded ‘right reasons’ than Darren Emerson. He’s stamped his mark on dance culture for 20 years, thoroughly resists the trappings of celebdom (his partner is a well-known TV personality), and still seeks out those emerging clubbing beacons spread-out across the world with the zeal of a wide-eyed newbie.

‘Bogotá’ is the 3rd Global Underground mix from Darren, and he’s crowned his hat trick with a metaphorical 25 yard volley, a double cd journey into the modern dancefloor, with a couple of tricks thrown in to remind you that he remains at the pinnacle of his craft. Though he would probably dispel the ‘legend’ tag with a characteristically self-deprecating chuckle, the Essex-born DJ and producer, could rightly hold claim to such superlatives. One of the early UK protagonists at the arrival of acid house, he went on to soundtrack British house’s emergence as a worldwide force; before forming a band called Underworld, and changing dance music forever.

Colombia’s Bogotá is a city enjoying rapid change. Historically a cultural epicentre of the South American continent, it’s now a growing metropolis with a club scene in rude health. Having made the time-honoured transition from big outdoor events to a wealth of individual clubs, it’s boom time for electronic music. Cue the arrival of Emerson to honour Bogotá with a Global Underground album that shares its musical values.

CD One begins with the chiming synths of the Underworld opus, ‘Mmm Skyscraper… I Love You’, before kickstarting the mix with Anja Schneider & Sebo K’s ‘Rancho Relaxo’, and the jacking house of Jagged’s ‘ Hello Kool Nice’ (Quarion Remix). Other highlights include Darren’s ‘Home’, Pete Heller’s ‘Sabotage’, and John Selway & Vincenzo Ragone’s ‘Dream Stealer’, and the electro-pop funk of Maja’s ‘Love Me For Tonight’.

Funk ‘Void’s remix of Itamar Sagi’s ‘One Million Oaks’ launches CD Two, which Emerson segues neatly into Kerri Chandler’s ‘Fortran’ (Argy’s Big Room Detroit mix). His recent single for GU, ‘Crash Jack’, is featured here via an exclusive mix from Jamie McHugh. Carl Cox needs little introduction to anyone with even a passing interest in dance music and DJ culture. As one of the original DJs from the UK’s massive illegal rave era he’s remained firmly at the top of his game ever since.

We chased him for over 10 years to do a City series mix for GU. Now he’s finally done it, but for one of the most travelled DJs on the planet, the location had to be a little extra special, hence Burning Man in the Nevada Desert.

Dave Seaman needs no introduction to the GU faithful, having previous mixed 3 classic outings for us from 3 different continents. He now adds a European string to his bow, presenting GU039 from one of Eastern Europe's hottest party destinations; the party resort of Palanga on the golden shores of the Baltic Sea, Lithuania. I've been digging a few GU's out lately. Ibiza, San Fran, Hong Kong, LA, Amsterdam and Pappa's Nubreed, which I have to say, fucking rocks big time, I forgot how cool it was! The finale on CD 2 is just immense. My favourite moment is the first 5 tracks of Ibiza CD 1, Deep Progress -> My Lexicon, it's just absolutely perfect.

I have the whole CD on vinyl except for Narcotic - Blue, which I think I should probably remedy, I'm pretty sure I could track a copy down. The hardest one for me to find was Eclipse 8 - Acoustic Principles, which I ended up paying $160 for, from Gemm.com, and got well arsed around by the guy who was selling it and finally received it after 4 months of cursing his name! Paragliders - Change Me took me ages to find as well, and Tilt - I Dream I got on the repress, and my friend who had the original promo was PISSED OFF! haha =) So many memories attached to that CD. <3

Then Danny Howells' Miami came out around the time I started getting into clubs, back when Perth was all about multi-venue winter festivals. Good times.

I really felt Seaman's Buenos Aires, Lima, Bogota and Rio were hit and miss in that department for me.

Both Lawler's & Howells Nubreed's still get regular spins.

Such a timeless series....this series opened my eyes to the wonderful world of prog.

Still can't go past Sashas effort with San Fran & Ibiza, fuck me.

Nice! Yeah, that San Fran comp really did big things for me. I was lucky to be in London at that stage and Narcotic - Blue was one of the first vinyls from that comp that I could find. Hear you on Paragliders and Eclipse 8......took ages too find!

i think the reason why both of those releases stood out to me was that they were a reflection of their djing talents.

sometimes these releases are too orchestrated and lose some of the 'magic' (*cough* joris voorn *cough* )

when a DJ is in their element, their instincts take over and while the result might not be as polished, its a better experience imo
