10 Minute mini Mix tips
Hey all,

Im entering into a DJ competition and the entry requires a 10 minute mini mix. I've never been one for the shorter mixes, so im curious as to what everyones opinions are on pulling off a mini mix... how many songs should i be aiming for, are they looking for more smooth, simple transitions or something a little different?

Any ideas would be great.

Cheers

I've done a few mini mixes around 10-15mins. I go through a fair few track and it's combo of mixing/bending cutting and extending breaks.

That style would work if you go through various genres. Wouldn't be ideal for EDM mix though cos tunes are like 6mins and most times you are doing longer transitions.

hmm i reckon 3 tracks, 3 minutes each. make sure they're in key and the execution is bang on target. simple mixes don't win competitions man!

or maybe it's a scratch DJ comp? so 10 mins of your finest skillz

I would be aiming for more than 3 tracks. But i guess it all depends what you're using to mix and what genre you're playing

It's a local comp, but there is a monthly 10 minute mix comp run at the djtutor website.

Hrmmmm - if it was breaks or hip hop I'd say have a listen to the A Skillz or Krafty Kuts mini mixes on sound cloud.....to me they are the definition of a mini mix....heaps of tracks the keep you rocking and guessing what's next for 8 to 10 minutes.
How they create these is a point of contention though.....i'd be guessing in a DAW and not actually mixed

Although having seen A Skillz recently again....he does rock through a lot of tracks very fast on the DVS

Perhaps 3 - 5 tracks well mixed with a really well placed accapella or something.

My opinion, just 3 tracks is going to sound like a slice of a 90 minute mix and nothing more......won't stand out

Try something like this mate... get some clean acapellas on top and built two tracks together! They have to be in key to work though...

Good luck!

+1

Have to keep people interested. 10mins should be pre prepared and show off your creativity/skillzz IMO

Yeah, that's why you need to have it all pre prepared haha. Nobody is interested in watching you stand there for 10mins and be technically brilliant and flawless in mixing 3 songs in and out of each other.

Never been interested in these 10mins mix comps...just not my style, rather hear a DJ just playing quality tunes and letting them speak for themselves, with some nice flow and subtle progression, than trendy faggots slamming together 45secs of 17 different utterly shite tracks just for the sake of it
Pete Gordon - Deep and Low

Slower tempo but still with balls, deephouse, slow-mo, futurehouse, nudeep, indie, nudisco, hints of progressive, whatever the fuck you want to call it, just good shit! Get on it

Mini-mixes are a lot of fun, its a great opportunity to show off your mixing and your biggest, most bangin tracks.

What I've done in the past is 10 tracks in 20 minutes and 5 tracks in 10 minutes. The key to a slick mini-mix is programming. With quick mixing it is helpful to pick tracks with long sections of beats and not much breakdown to keep the energy and hence the listener engaged.

If you have a bomb you want to feature in the mix but it just doesn't fit no matter how you cut it, you can make a custom edit of the track in audacity/ableton/virtualdj and make it fit (classic top20 mix CD trick).

hope this helps, good luck

ps. For reference here is one of my better mini-mixes

Let's be honest. With some prog, you might not even hear it out!

Might call for some Peter Hook-ness!
