It’s been a while since I heard a decent no bullshit hip hop mixtape, so Jackprest’s Syd City has done the job in all the right places. Featuring a cover similar to that of the film with the similar name, Prest teams up with Good Buddha, The Tongue and Ozi Batla, who all do a fine job of representing their city over a whole host of quality beats.
From memory, joints from DJ Premier, Urthboy, Hermitude, Downsyde, Missy and Kanye West are well utilised alongside what I’m led to believe are a few original productions – but then I have no way of truly knowing, so I’ll just enjoy it. The musical element is well covered, alongside humour and quality rhyming, with the highlight a very Sydney freestyle sesh over a simple beat, funny and on point in equal doses. As required, the mixing is equally on point, although it probably should be if you’re forking out your dollars, at the hands of a man who has been playing the diverse venues and nights of Chinese Laundry and Purple Sneakers.
It was launched over the weekend at the Hopetoun Hotel in Sydney, so should you have forgotten, or never cared, that the World Cup just started it may well have been a damn good outing if it was half as action packed as this CD.
