It’s easy to lament the diminishing prevalence of breaks. Ministry of Sound recently stated upfront in their press release for Kid Kenobi’s Sessions release that, “This is not a breaks CD”, even though there were a peppering of breakbeat tracks across both discs. And with this release, Sydney stalwart (I won’t dare say breaks DJ) Elroy has released a slamming electro track with labelmate and sometime production partner Tom Piper, with little in the way of break beats to be seen.
But honestly: who cares about genre definitions when the quality of music is this good?
The original has club stomper written all over it, and shows just about every facet of what makes electro so enticing. There’s a ripping fash-trash lyric that compliments the banging bassline, a buildup that adds some lush pads and sharp stabs, not to mention the occasional clever layering of some neatly underplayed percussion that adds depth to the overall sound. Short review: it’s hot.
RobKAY’s mix electrifies things to a greater extent than the original, while stripping the lyric back and adding some neat percussion of his own – essential stuff for fans of his previous releases. The Matty Martinez mix adds some acid flavours to the beats, the Implex Hektick Mix puts the RobKAY style mix through the processor and serves it up with sharp electro stabs and stutter lyrics, while the Nick Galea mix treads the same ground as the original in terms of structure and feel but manages to shift the gear up a notch with some driving beats and spacy, future house style keys.
The Cutoff Mix has a cool Dirty South vibe working for it so should be checked out for fans of his work, and rounding off the package is the Nick Thayer pres. Rok Raydio Mix, which unfortunately suffers from trying to do a little too much. There’s so much going on in terms of stuttering cut up vocals, grinding electro sounds and stabs galore that it’s a little hard to listen to – it would probably work at three in the morning in a packed club though, which is probably what it was designed for at any rate.
It’s been said a thousand times, and it’s true that as Aussie’s we love patting ourselves on the back for world class production quality, but I don’t care. This is world class electro house. Get on it if you like to dance.
