For those people across the country that have already experienced the musical event of the year – namely the Daft Punk NeverEverLand shows, this release will come as no huge surprise on two fronts: its very timely release, and of course, the sound. Given some of the reviews thus far regarding those shows, this release will be music to many ears for months, if not years, to come. Recorded live at Bercy, Paris in June 2007, it is the quintessential Daft Punk show: chock full of hits, and done in such a way so as to make sure that every slowly cranking crescendo, every deafening drop, every mind blowing mash-up, are all done with maximum force that extracts every last ounce of energy out of the fans below the pyramid.
Robot Rock kicks it off in exactly that way – and as you hear the crowd going absolutely bonkers, you can’t help but want to be a part of it. Technologic is the next cab off the rank, and while it slows things down, momentarily, all it does is ensure that the next such drop, accompanied by roaring crowd, blows your mind. Again. Seriously guys, goose bumps. Enter a souped up version of Television Rules The Nation and Crescendolls and Around the World, all mixed up into a sound that is so damn good, it’s almost stupid. Too Long from the album Discovery is given some serious rev-up, a serious improvement on the album version, but it’s when that all too familiar tune that just screams Around the World, you know the screaming masses are in a pretty good place. Loop it into Harder Better Faster Stronger and well, chaos ensues.
Burnin’ is morphed into another dose of Too Long and the pace drops just a touch, and in a set that runs for 74 minutes, this is well, the intermission. Face to Face comes in very slowly, and for me, if there was one low point of the set then it’s this. Good chance to catch your breath perhaps, but folks, do it quickly, as the tweaks, the bleeps, the scratching, it all is about to go up a notch. And when that bell sounds…….yep – One More Time, complete and utter madness ensues, and it overlays into the ridiculous sounding guitar on Aerodynamic, but all the while, _‘music’s got me feeling so great, we’re gonna celebrate’_… Shit yes. Mixing up Prime Time of Your Life, Brainwasher, Rollin’ and Scratchin and Alive and you’ve got a very hard electro sound that’s absolutely pumping. For me, while the crowds will voice their approval at the well-known tracks, it is somewhere in this four-way mix-up, that the musical demon in you will just unleash completely. The beat: frenetic. The tune: cracking. The sound: addictive.
Dropping it back a touch is the infamous Da Funk which for me, all those years ago, was the song that first got me interested in dance music. I was still at high school. Has it aged? Shit no. Pyramid or not, this is a cracking and timeless tune. Wrapping it all up, is another ‘oh my god’ mix-up comprising of Superheroes, Human After All and Rock’n’roll – leaving you breathless, but wanting more and more.
Notable in its absence for me, was that there was no sign of Revolution 909 ; who knows, maybe that comes in the encore. Either way, with robot fever spreading across the nation at the minute, this release together with their first shows down under shows why these lads/robots are, well, so hot right now. The release sounds a touch similar to the Coachella version that is circulating in some quarters, but the end result is the same. They leave a trail of destruction wherever they go, and leave bewildered punters wanting more. More. And more. I want to call the NeverEverLand show the musical event of our generation. Get a taste here, and jump on board. Unleash the robot within.

I love the way they constructed a giant plastic pyramid to disguise the fact that it's an Ableton set and everyone's convinced that it's the greatest show on Earth. More like 'KISS' , if you ask me....

evilchris2, whether or not it's just an Ableton mash, it's the entirety of the show that is winning praise right now off people, with good reason. The show has a palpable vibe that is off the charts good, it's easily the show of the year if not one of the best dance shows ever.

If its so easy evilchris2.... why aren't there other people doing something similar? That said, it is essentially a simple idea, but at least they pull it of better than anyone else.

Evil Chris go away and die quietly in a corner, no one is interested in your blasphemy. Ableton set or not, it the greatest sound AND light show i've ever witnessed. Clearly you either haven't seen it, or you're just a complete retard.. I'm leaning towards the latter.

ok. ok. so it could be bananas in pyjamas dressed as robots pressing play on a cd player. The fact is that daft punk have created mystery and intrigue in what they do. If their tunes were shit, no one would be the slightest bit interested. But they're not. They're magical. Talented or not. The show was amazing. Light. Sound. and utmost fascination about why the hell they wanted to wear helmets in the first place. And i was one of the few sober ones. :)

evilchris2, your gobbing off proves just one thing..... you don't understand it so you have to pour scorn on it. Go play in the traffic or crawl back under your rock.

love daft punk, show in sydney was a bit of a let down... very badly organised.. every time the wind blew you could hardly hear the music from the middle of the dancefloor.. should have had more speakers around the sides or in the middle of the floor..

Nice troll evilchris2. LOL. You didn't mention that 'KISS' is essential to be able to pull off any live gig successfully and that an Ableton mash is not as easy as one might think. There are a lot of samples and sequences in there and it takes practice to get it right. Also, they operated the synth filters/effects live and their precision was truly impressive. Not to mention the amazing light show and the incredible vibe they managed to put out. I am so glad they decided to stick to 'KISS'.

Excellent CD, now I need to track down the Limited Edition... anyone know where I could pick one up from...?

5 for sure... for those who question using ableton, think about the work before this set, the set might be quite easy, but you have to cut all the loops of all thier albums and collabs and warp them in ableton, etc. bloody hard work!

refering to evilchris2's statement the Dj's Daft punk use abelton live, with Middi samplers and efects units hooked up to it, if you also read about daft punk they manualy control their own lighting from within their pyramid as well. it is very rare to see dj's manually control their own lighting during such an epic set. yes abelton is used but if you keep track of most dj's for example John Digweed, He uses Abelton live which is hooked up to his Allen and Heath Xone 3D mixer, so dont take credit away from daft punk which are world renound dj's and producers, good day :)
