For those people across the country that have already experienced the musical event of the year – namely the Daft Punk NeverEverLand shows, this release will come as no huge surprise on two fronts: its very timely release, and of course, the sound. Given some of the reviews thus far regarding those shows, this release will be music to many ears for months, if not years, to come. Recorded live at Bercy, Paris in June 2007, it is the quintessential Daft Punk show: chock full of hits, and done in such a way so as to make sure that every slowly cranking crescendo, every deafening drop, every mind blowing mash-up, are all done with maximum force that extracts every last ounce of energy out of the fans below the pyramid.
Robot Rock kicks it off in exactly that way – and as you hear the crowd going absolutely bonkers, you can’t help but want to be a part of it. Technologic is the next cab off the rank, and while it slows things down, momentarily, all it does is ensure that the next such drop, accompanied by roaring crowd, blows your mind. Again. Seriously guys, goose bumps. Enter a souped up version of Television Rules The Nation and Crescendolls and Around the World, all mixed up into a sound that is so damn good, it’s almost stupid. Too Long from the album Discovery is given some serious rev-up, a serious improvement on the album version, but it’s when that all too familiar tune that just screams Around the World, you know the screaming masses are in a pretty good place. Loop it into Harder Better Faster Stronger and well, chaos ensues.
Burnin’ is morphed into another dose of Too Long and the pace drops just a touch, and in a set that runs for 74 minutes, this is well, the intermission. Face to Face comes in very slowly, and for me, if there was one low point of the set then it’s this. Good chance to catch your breath perhaps, but folks, do it quickly, as the tweaks, the bleeps, the scratching, it all is about to go up a notch. And when that bell sounds…….yep – One More Time, complete and utter madness ensues, and it overlays into the ridiculous sounding guitar on Aerodynamic, but all the while, _‘music’s got me feeling so great, we’re gonna celebrate’_… Shit yes. Mixing up Prime Time of Your Life, Brainwasher, Rollin’ and Scratchin and Alive and you’ve got a very hard electro sound that’s absolutely pumping. For me, while the crowds will voice their approval at the well-known tracks, it is somewhere in this four-way mix-up, that the musical demon in you will just unleash completely. The beat: frenetic. The tune: cracking. The sound: addictive.
Dropping it back a touch is the infamous Da Funk which for me, all those years ago, was the song that first got me interested in dance music. I was still at high school. Has it aged? Shit no. Pyramid or not, this is a cracking and timeless tune. Wrapping it all up, is another ‘oh my god’ mix-up comprising of Superheroes, Human After All and Rock’n’roll – leaving you breathless, but wanting more and more.
Notable in its absence for me, was that there was no sign of Revolution 909 ; who knows, maybe that comes in the encore. Either way, with robot fever spreading across the nation at the minute, this release together with their first shows down under shows why these lads/robots are, well, so hot right now. The release sounds a touch similar to the Coachella version that is circulating in some quarters, but the end result is the same. They leave a trail of destruction wherever they go, and leave bewildered punters wanting more. More. And more. I want to call the NeverEverLand show the musical event of our generation. Get a taste here, and jump on board. Unleash the robot within.
