Parisian indie-rock/new wave auteur Anthony Gonzalez (aka M83) has certainly cultivated considerable levels of anticipation in the three years following the release of his breakthrough ‘Before The Dawn Heals Us’ collection, and ‘Couleurs’ represents the first single to be lifted from his newly-released fourth artist album ‘Saturdays=Youth.’

In its original eight and a half minute long album form, ‘Couleurs’ clearly shows the influence of co-producer Ewan Pearson’s studio collaborative input, with a crisp electro edge not present in previous M83 productions interlocking fluidly with Gonzalez’s signature rapturous stacked synth pads and jagged guitar strokes that curiously call to mind The Edge circa ‘Streets Have No Name.’ The end result proves to be something of an opulent mini-epic that manages to blend LCD Soundsystem-esque duelling cowbells with the sort of understated synthetic melancholy of New Order’s ‘Blue Monday’ – epic disco/punk-funk for the depressive, if you will.

On the flip, Jori Hulkkonen offers up a comparatively short reworking that gets considerably more ‘main room’ oriented than many of his other recent productions, making maximal use of the original’s veiled vocals by placing them right at the front of the mix as pounding techy kick drums and shimmering, vaguely trance-y synth riffs build towards an epic conclusion.

A stunning appetiser from M83 that bodes extremely well for the full album. Check out www.ilovem83.com.
