John ‘00’ Fleming and Christopher Lawrence have collaborated previously with the track Attention on Joof Recordings in 2006 and now they have teamed up again with the debut release on Lawrence’s new label Pharmacy Music. The original mix is pretty much what you would expect from these two – pumping club trance. It gets going straight away with some extra kicks in the intro, and then keeps going until 4 minutes in when the first breakdown hits. The main melody is quite simple and while there are some great sounds throughout, it just doesn’t really stand out to me. This is a good tune, but it isn’t really a fantastic tune, which I think I was expecting.
Things are looking up however with the Deep Mix. I’m not sure exactly where the ‘deep’ part comes into play because this is just as banging as the original. It has pretty much the same structure and same melody as before but the typical psy-trance kick as well as a good helping of acid push this one past the original mix in my view. Jay Selway comes up with a great remix though, adding some spoken samples to the intro and a pounding kick and bass. It’s great trance, it’s not quite full on psy but has the drive of a Protoculture track and it works well, using a different take on the main melody. The best of the bunch for me.
Nicholas Bennison is the second remixer and one of my favourite producers. Judging from his remix it would seem like the psy influence from Fleming is making it’s way through the US trance scene. A darker tint is evident with the kick and rolling bassline, but I found it hard to really distinguish this mix from the original and deep mixes. They all have slightly different touches but they seem like the same track at times with just different bits swapped around. Last but not least we have the remix by DJ San. This is a great track, with percussion more like a tech trance tune and with some nice synths I think it makes better use of the original elements than the Bennison remix, with the main melody put slightly in the background. The buildup is great, with almost the right amount of epic-ness. A close second after the Selway remix for me.
Overall this is a really good package, but out of five tracks only two or three really stand out as fantastic to me. I really like all the producers in this release but maybe my perhaps too high expectations are holding me back from liking it as much as I want to! Nonetheless a good start for Pharmacy Music.
