Kaskade - Strobelite Seduction

It’s been a little while for our San Francisco boy Kaskade, but if first impressions count for anything, it looks like he’s once again delivered, and has absolutely done it in typical Kaskade style.

Move for Me is the first single and despite being a joint effort with Deadmau5, has all the hallmarks of being one of ‘those’ Kaskade tracks: hands in the air, emotions running high, soft lyrics and is in the classic Be Still genre. That said even better is Angel On My Shoulder – with the finished product made up of a similar make up, but with the vocals being belted out by Tamra Keenan, who has collaborated with Kaskade before and the track is an absolute cracker. The lush sound, the solid beat, and again the amazing vocals, make for a standout track and one that will touch the quintessential Kaskade fan in all the right spots.

Back On You has the vocals of Sunsun of Be Still acclaim, and again, Raddon hits the right buttons. While it may be classed as cheese to some, for the Kaskade fan it’s smooth musical bliss. Step One Two picks up the beats a touch, and it has Deadmau5 written all over it, which is not necessarily a bad thing and for a moment there sounds eerily like the Deadmau5 remix of Daft Punk’s Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger, before, once again, e enter very familiar Kaskade territory. And therein lies a touch of one of the possible criticisms of this album; it’s all so typically Kaskade.

Then the whole thing seems to slow down, incredibly. Pose and I Remember are thrown in to take the spot of the predictable soft ballads, with the tried and tested earthy beats and velvety vocals, before Borrowed Theme takes it back even more and is well, probably not a dance track. I’d be inclined to think that you might see it on a chillout CD some time soon, but even that could be wishful thinking.

Your Love is Black wraps it up, and once again, Tamra Keenan comes back at you with breathless vocals that if you’re looking for a gentle, uplifting feel, you’ll get plenty of currency here. To continue the economic metaphor, it – and the entire second half of the release makes for a very ‘soft landing’. That said, they’ve all been done in the typical Kaskade guise, and I dare say we’ll get a few jumpier remixes of each in time. Strangely enough, they’re the kind of songs that could easily morph into some nice prog remixes.

All up, this is Kaskade doing what he does best, although you may find yourself feeling a bit short-changed as the whole thing only runs for a miserly 39 minutes. As much as a few more tracks would’ve been nice, I can only imagine they would have sounded, well, much the same. It’s a criticism to an extent: it is far from offensive, and it probably won’t win many new fans, but will be music to the ears of the loyal ones that have loved Kaskade from day one. Ultimately, it’s Kaskade doing what he does best.
