If ever there was a producer who deserved a lot more love from his hometown, it must be Deepchild. Originally from Sydney, Rick ‘deepchild’ Bull spends as much time flitting between Berlin and Edinburgh as he does in Australia, with gigs throughout Europe filling in the gaps. Along the way he’s remixed artists stretching from New Order to Booka Shade, and been remixed by Hipp-E, Jimpster and Luomo among others. Despite this, widespread recognition of the man’s talent has only really come from overseas. Here’s hoping that this gorgeous slice of minimal/tech/house/radness can help readdress this.
One thing that makes Deepchild’s music so attractive is the warmth he manages to imbue each track with. This album continues the gradual shift away from the dubby downtempo vibes of 2000’s Hymns From Babylon and 2001’s Chocolate Dubs, towards the more dancefloor oriented sounds of his other more recent offerings, but the irrepressible warmth of the music remains constant. Nowhere is this more obvious than in Fractures, a track suffused with a comfortable background fuzz. Even Pretty, a delicate little interlude between tracks manages to capture this vibe.
Norwegian Calculus is a crisp and intricate offering that makes use of a sample of a water jug – an idea as intriguing as the track name! Burst Appendix is a more laidback affair, while Evil Bride of Deepchild steps it up a notch with a nice stuttering melody. You builds slowly into a dance floor-destroying piece of techy awesomeness, at times reminiscent of some of his older work. If there’s a low-point on the album, it’s Droid Musik, an odd track that also happens to be the only track with vocals.
Having been around for the best part of a decade, it’s good to see that Deepchild is starting to get some of the respect he deserves. His music is for the body and soul, but more importantly it’s music for the mind.
