Skrillex scores ‘Best New Artist’ Grammy nomination

Image for Skrillex scores ‘Best New Artist’ Grammy nomination

Despite the chorus of disbelievers, there’s no doubt 2011 has been good to Skrillex. Now the bro-step/complextro/’insert name here’ superstar has bagged himself a Grammy nomination in the ‘Best New Artist’ category.

Skrillex is up against Bon Iver, Nicki Minaj, The Band Perry and J. Cole – a mixed bunch if ever there was one. Usually dance music is neatly confined to the Best Dance Recording category, so this is a significant moment if you count these kinds of moments as significant.

Skrillex does also appear in the Best Dance Recordings nominees, alongside fellow top-earners like David Guetta and Deadmau5. Robyn’s Call Your Girlfriend is in there breaking up the boys’ club as well.

Arguably the standout of all the dance/electronic nominees is Australia’s own Cut Copy, whose very fine album Zonoscope has scored a nod. The accolade comes after a strong year for the band on the Stateside circuit. What a Grammys it would be if the boys from Melbourne muscled out the competition!

Death-match with Bon Iver.

what defines a 'new' artist anyway - hasnt bon iver released two or three albums already?

that's always puzzled me too. Like Daft Punk winning Best Dance Recording in 2009 for a track that come out about 8 years earlier!

Glad to see Cut Copy get a nomination. Shame they won't win it. Zonoscope is a great release.

Say what you will about Skrillex (but actually, don't, he's earned this), but this proves that the Grammy's are the last awards show with integrity because the nominees aren't your usual Top 40 offenders.

He shouldn't win much beyond best remix and, maybe, best newcomer, so can all the haters relax? Ceebs going through a Skrillex argument.

You could say they're Cuttering up the thread.

But seriously, Cut Copy getting a nomination is more worthwhile news than Skrillex getting one. It's a shame this article chooses to blatantly focus on that instead of focus on a great Australian act getting a grammy limelight.

Supporting local acts on an international scale > Getting trolled over Skrillex.

Hey B_e_de - this is how it happened: Best New Artist nominees announced, story written, then 20 minutes later came the rest of the categories, hence why that was the focus of the news piece

Congratulations on Cut Copy (Aussies represent...). I am amazed at the remixes .. Deadmau5 remixes Foo Fighters, Skrillex remixes Benny Benassi talk about cross genres..

Would have liked more of a story on Cut Copy getting nominated for best dance album that's pretty huge for an Australian band surely!?

I've got nothing against your way, style or how you came about making this article. I just don't like the lack of attention Cut Copy got is all.

Could've edited the article afterwards or made a follow-up article? I dunno, I'm not a journalist, it's not my field. I just know what I prefer as a consumer.

No no, you dudes are right. I was going to write another story re. Cut Copy but, well, it didn't happen & the good ship has sailed. They now have their very own congratulatory paragraph in this story, if that suffices.

With the amount of skrillex related articles coming out ... and even the references to skrillex when the articles not even about him - you'd think skrillex works at ITM for f*cks sake... ITM WHERE IS YOUR F*CKING INTEGRITY?

As with most awards for dance music or music in general, the results always defy any form of logic.

Skrillex: best new artist.... or.... BEST NEW ART?

P.S. No, I don't want to diss the person who made that doll, but it seemed to fit here so well... :bl:
