Watch: Flying Lotus creates a new audiovisual show

With help from Red Bull Music Academy, electronic adventurer Flying Lotus has created an audiovisual show that gels with his weird and wonderful music. The L.A. beatmaker has set out to tour his new album, Until The Quiet Comes, bringing the ‘Layer 3’ experience to concert halls in the UK, U.S. and Europe. Visual artists Strangeloop and Timeboy collaborated on the distinctive look of his show, which utilises three transparent curtains and front-and-rear projectors to “transport FlyLo into outer dimensions”. Red Bull has made a slick video of the ‘Layer 3’ concept in the lead-up to a packed-out show in New York, which you can watch below.
While the results are certainly mesmerising, FlyLo admits that the audiovisual thing has been an adjustment. “Playing inside there is kinda crazy, ‘cause I’m used to being really close to everyone and being able to see everything,” he says in the video. “But it’s a little difficult at the moment. In a way, it’s kind of cool, because I can really get inside my head with it and not worry if everyone’s going apeshit or not. I can just zone out and tell the story I want to tell. It really feels magical when you see it.”
Flying Lotus is keeping his Until The Quiet Comes tour rolling throughout November. Next Friday, he’s set to join a staggering line-up at Manchester’s Warehouse Project for the RBMA showcase, playing alongside Squarepusher, Jamie XX, Martyn, Lapalux, Thundercat, Krystal Klear, Illum Sphere, DJ Shadow, Shed, Prosumer, Pearson Sound, Ben UFO and more. Oh, for a teleporter.
After he’s done with Europe, the producer will take the long haul down under for a string of New Year’s shows. While we doubt ‘Layer 3’ will come with him, at least the next-level music is guaranteed.
