"Bold, brave and timeless": Nicolas Jaar crowned Essential Mixer of the Year

While there’ve been some exceptional Essential Mixes this year – Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, Hot Chip, Carl Cox and Gaslamp Killer, we’re looking at you – the honour of Essential Mix of the Year has pretty much been decided since May. Nicolas Jaar floored just about everyone (prior fan or not) with his first ever Essential Mix earlier this year, so it’s no surprise that Pete Tong and co have crowned his 120-minute masterpiece 2012’s Essential Mix of the Year.

“The mix was chosen by a panel of expert judges, including Pete Tong and the Friday Night Dance Music Marathon team,” the BBC announced over the weekend. “The judges thought that Jaar’s mix was bold, brave and timeless. It mixed Aphex Twin with string quartets, Ricardo Villalobos with Marvin Gaye, it had Beyonce unplugged and it had Jay Z playing golf!” Not only that, Jaar even threw N*SYNC into the mix, alongside cuts from Fiest, his own album Space is Only Noise and the New Yorker’s lauded Sneaky Sound System remix. “I’ve watched Jurassic Park twice in my life – once when I was six and the second time a couple of weeks ago”, the 22-year old explained when the mix first aired. “It inspired me to think about how gaps in time change our way of perceiving”.

Seven-odd months down the track, Jaar’s handiwork is still just as superb. Grab the headphones and delve into 2012’s reigning Essential Mix again below, or on the BBC website.

it might be put together beautifully , but it is a insult to the dance industry to call that the best mix of the year

Aarrgghh... I just got around to listening to this... well tried to... its horseshit! I kept looking over at my phone thinking I was on hold to Telstra or something. Sure is an insult to dance music. Jacques Lu Cont, TEED & Scuba EMs were all on high rotation for me...
