With 22 volumes of the Balance series now notched up, including Nic Fanciulli and Funk D’Void in 2012, the esteemed label is launching its ‘presents’ offshoot. The first chapter of this new series is mixed London house star jozif, whose effort involves just 13 hand-picked tracks on one disc. As Balance’s Tom Pandzic explains, the ‘presents’ compilations “will focus on the next generation of DJ/producers that are flying the flag for quality electronic music, and moving the scene forward.”
If you buy house records, you’ve probably encountered the name jozif in recent years. As well as releasing on labels like Wolf + Lamb and Infine, the Londoner also set up his own imprint Fist Or Finger with revered DJ and Fabric resident Craig Richards. He spent a good part of 2012 finessing his sets, and found his groove comfortably in Ibiza. As jozif explains, his vision for the Balance mix took an unforeseen turn.
“I think I’m one of those people that is always trying to make sure that dancefloor is having a good time without being too dictated by it,” the DJ writes in the Balance press notes. “Initially for my Balance mix, I really wanted to do a clubby mix. A lot of people will know me only from my productions which I don’t really tend to play in the clubs as I tend to play a lot more ‘up’, so I wanted to do something that represented what I do on the weekends.
“I did the first version and we started to get the records cleared, but in the meantime a good friend of mine passed away suddenly and although I hadn’t seen him for a while, it really affected me. I didn’t think it was right to put out such an upbeat mix when such an awful thing had happened so I went back to the mix and just did another one and this is how it turned out.”
On Balance presents jozif, the DJ blends classic names like Ian Pooley and Charles Webster alongside the likes of Steffi, Rob Shields and our own Yoko0. His mix also nods to Martin Dawson, the UK producer who died in late 2012. Balance presents jozif is out February 22nd, 2013 in Australia.
