2am lockout imposed in Sydney

An amendment to NSW Licence Conditions was passed today, implementing stringent restrictions on many of the state’s licensed venues. Commencing 1 December, the new conditions include a lockout between 2am and 5am and a ‘restricted service period’ from midnight till the time the declared venue closes. Just as it did in Melbourne, the lockout demands that venues refuse patrons entry during that three hour window. Punters already inside the venue cannot leave and re-enter between those times. Presumably, arriving at a club after 5am is respectable and a-OK.

The ‘restricted service period’ is even more severe. After midnight, no drinks – alcoholic or otherwise – can be served in a glass or breakable plastic container. Certain drinks are also prohibited in the ‘restricted service period’. These include shots, any RTD with an alcohol volume above 5%, any drink containing more than 50% spirits or liqueur, or any drink prepared on the premises that contains more than one 30 ml nip of spirits or liqueur (no doubles, kids). Light beer in a plastic cup, then? Buying rounds might prove difficult too. During the ‘restricted service period’, no single person will be allowed to buy more than 4 drinks at a time or more than a single bottle of wine.

Idiots dont realise that the ammount of problems is going to increase... What will happen when all of these piss heads that are trying to get into another place not wanting to go home are all stuck walking the streets. Lets see more piss heads walking the streets with nothing to do?? Hmm yes they will be the most friendly people wont they. They wont be getting into fights with other piss heads that have also been locked out.

That 'single bottle of wine' is served in a plastic jug too... FREAKS in Government. This State Government are wanting to roll this out for EVERY venue across the state. Get in early on this Facebook group, Post it to your profile and invite 1000 friends each!! This is a violation of your civil liberties and worse of all will encourage venues NOT to call the police if there is something wrong.. having the OPPOSITE effect of putting people on the street without a police presence. The police need to increase their passive presence in Entertainment areas and punish ANTI SOCIAL behaviour. There should also be better public transport between 2 and 5 AM. Last train leaves Kings Cross at 1.30, and you can't get a taxi from 2.30 till 5AM. This also means that smokers cannot leave a club for a cigarette. You cannot order a cocktail past midnight, and everything served in plastic which is an environmental disgrace. Get 100 000 people on facebook group ASAP. http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=30994334503 www.dontpunishus.com.au

thats wrong, it gets worse, in the restricted service time, the bar must shut down for 10 mins every hour, for which there will be no service other than water for ten mins, if a venue has multiple bars, this is not a loophole, all bars must cease service at the same time every hour, this ten minute time period must also be random, ie it cant be at ten past the hour every hour... oh, and if you go outside for a cigarette, your not getting back in...

Just the beginning of the government trying to control everyone. Everyone will either(take drugs) or drink faster.... Its stupid. When I was in Sydney, i found it so difficult to get a cab around 2-3am :( we had to walk!! I guess we can still party hard in Adelaide! :)

Yeah..right on. The y did it here (lockout) in Melbourne and within the first week not only did about 400 venues get excluded from the lockout, but assaults went up 10% in the first week. Now they have repealed it and the Liquor licensing Commission are a laughing stock. Hope it happens up there, but you guys (with respect) have copped police state action since runup to the Olympics.. I dunno about the special conditions you guys are copping drinks wise, that is way out of line. Are these venues the only ones copping it or is it across the board? I wonder with all the bullshit laws that the State and Federal Govts are trying to force on us (curfews, internet filter, etc), maybe we should all stop partying for a bit..might need our heads on to fight it!

For many years we have been able to enjoy the freedom of floating between venues, now because of immature spoilt little rich kids who have never been taught how to respect others we are having to lose our privilidges. They should all stick to ruining Facebook parties and stay the hell away from "Dodge" and allow us good folk to have good time and enjoy ourselves with the freedom we deserve.

biggest pile of shit i have ever seen. only emphasises how far out of touch these people are. i do not see how they possibly conceive this will work. by making it exclusive to these venues its only going to shift the problem to the pubs/clubs that never had any issues. 2am - 5am lockout? what if you want to grab a bite to eat or some fresh air? youre gonna have to stay inside and probably end up getting even more drunk only going to make it worse...

Im calling it now - the revolution of the party drug. School has just finished and i have already noticed a dis-preportional amount of first time clubbers taking party drugs. They eat them like candy because its all they can afford. Good on NSW government - loosing revenue to the dealers. You cant control that.

This policy is so floored in so many ways. All you people behind the bar just wasted a whole lot of time doing RSA's, the Govt is now handling that for you. What about a shift worker finishing at 2am and wanting an after work drink? sorry you'll have to go home, I'd call that discrimination and ripe for the challenging. There's a whole lot more stupidity in the legislation but I won't go on.

After the third attempt of sleep that night, the jetlag-stricken tourist finally decides to admit defeat and go for a walk in this new city. Maybe a nightcap would help him sleep. As he wandered the bare streets of Sydney at 3am, to his utter amazement and shock, he realized that not a single pub or club would allow him entry into their exciting atmospheres. People were exiting the venues with smiles and fits of laughter. He longed to bear witness and feel what they’re feeling. Due to the lockout, he wasn’t able to obtain his nightcap. After being rejected from yet another pub, he came across a young man who offered him entry into a club. It was “underground” the young man said but they had alcohol and music. “Just don’t tell the cops about it,” he said, as he winked and nudged with a giggle. After a few seconds of close inspection, the tourist deduced that the young man was friendly and of no threat to him, but was just someone else out in the town looking for a place to have a nightcap. He figured it might be a place to meet some interesting people in this foreign city. He follows the young man through the backstreets and down 3 flights of stairs. Others are also coming and going as they please from all different directions. Finally they enter a space with an explosion of energy. There are smiles and hugs all around as people from all walks of life bounce and shuffle to the rhythmic beats. The music was exhilarating and uplifting. When he asked about the name of the club all he was told was “The Underground” and to not “tell too many people about it”. It was the only place these night-owls had to get together after the 2am lockout was introduced. And what an interesting bunch they were! Some of them had just finished their nightshifts and needed a place to unwind. Some of them just wanted to kick on for a few more hours as they celebrated their special occasions. It made sense that they wouldn’t want their night to end. Some were married, some had kids. Some were in suits, some were in shorts. Some were going through break-ups, some were looking for love. Some were looking for answers. Others were dolling out advice. There were entrepreneurs and employees. They were all exhilarated, free, uninhibited, and happy. Goodness knows what trials and tribulations would face them when they awoke the next day in their everyday lives. Right now they were just enjoying life and having fun. Perhaps an escape, perhaps a release, but certainly a necessity. He met a man named Ed who was working on a Baz Luhrman production. He met a DJ from Israel who told him first-hand what the economic situation was like out there. He met a man from Switzerland who had worked with real wizards. He spoke to a girl who survived the Kosovo bombings and was now helping people deal with depression via a phone helpline. He met a Call Centre Operator, a Travel Consultant, a Sales Rep for one of the biggest Audio/Visual distributors in Australia, an Oil Exporter, a Banker, an Analyst, a Financial Broker, a Manager, a Butcher, a Baker, and even a Candlestick-maker! Ofcourse all he actually knew was their names, as he didn’t hear their life stories or even know their occupations, but they were there either way just letting loose. There was a single mum from South Africa who caught his eye and was kind enough to show him around. They made plans to meet the following day so that he could see the city from a semi-local’s perspective. She joined him in his nightcap and educated him in this interesting dance called “the shuffle” that he had never seen before. He vowed to practice it before he left so that he could show his friends back home. As his weary head finally hit the pillow later that morning, he recounted the enjoyable events of the past few hours. The tourist wondered, “Why would such a place be illegal?” ~ Kea Fefelov, 4 December, 2008
