Although Ministry of Sound in London is a clubbing institution on the brink of closure, but closer to home here in Adelaide it’s time for us to say goodbye to a pillar that has held up the local scene. Anyone who’s been to the west end of the city and down the infamous Hindley Street would have certainly come across the hot-little-thumbing-box-of-beats we know and love as Cargo.
So how come this place of history is about to be off the map? Uni SA, who own the building, want to tear it down in the coming year so it can be used for storage. Yes, you read correctly. Storage! Known in more recent years as the house for, well… house, this history of the venue goes much further back. Opening up in 1987, Cargo was the home of jazz and other funky live music styles in Adelaide.
Larry Salerno, one of the key figures in the establishment of Adelaide’s scene in the late nineties, took over the club in 1997. During his 13-year reign he brought to Adelaide some of the best parties to be had, as well as the best artists. Home to GT and Scott T at their ever-popular Wednesday night party, over the years it was also an epicenter of RnB, hip-hop, funk and tech, and also classic jungle and DnB.
There will most definitely be a few lost clubbers, particularly those in their thirties who grew up in this venue. It certainly marks the end of an era, and possibly the end of the true west end vibe on Hindley Street. Make sure you get yourself down to Cargo this Saturday night for the venue’s final party!
