Having pioneered their own wildly unique brand of house music since the very late 90s, 2009 marked a landmark year for Basement Jaxx as it signaled the 10th anniversary of their seminal debut Remedy and also their long-awaited release from a five-album deal with label XL Recordings.
“We started with the Remedy and finished with the Scars, which is quite funny, really – getting to the source of the pain,” Felix Buxton of the Jaxx told Spinner.com recently, clearly amused by their somewhat ironic choice of album titles to bookend the XL Recordings relationship. “We’ve just come out the other side, which is actually nice because we’ve been really busy for 10 years.”
Preparing for a triumphant return to Australia in February for the Good Vibrations Festival, in the interview Felix also spoke about how they’ve seen their music influence a new generation of producers and dance artists. “You’ve got Major Lazer over there (in America), and Crookers and Justice. The ‘fidget house’ thing. We feel slightly like daddies because we created that kind of idea or whatever. Which is nice, they’re all like, “I wouldn’t be doing this if you hadn’t done those tracks like Fly Life.”
“Dave [Taylor] from Switch was saying that’s the reason he actually started making music – and that’s great,” Felix continued. “He did it really well, man, he took it and put a new angle on it. He’s created a form that now other producers are copying.”
