Eddy Grant is set to rock down to his lawyers after claiming that the latest Gorillaz single Stylo rips off his dubiously classic 1983 house hit Time Warp.
According to Grant, the keyboard section is the same on both tracks and has even alleged that the Damon Albarn and his animated cohort were aware of the similarities.
Speaking to NME, Grant claims that “Damon Albarn knows in his heart of hearts [that it’s plagiarism] – it’s unfortunate that we can’t get into people’s hearts – he knows that this is a song that he’s loved, in his club days.”
“In a properly configured relationship I would have gotten a call from EMI to say, ‘Damon wants to use Time Warp. What arrangement can you guys come to? Would you claim 100 per cent, would you claim 60 per cent, or 70 per cent of whatever it is?’,” Grant suggested. “That phone call never came. Instead what happened is somebody went straight to a musicologist, implying that there was some kind of pre-knowledge of some kind of infringement.”
Though both Grant and Gorillaz are represented by the same publishing company, EMI, they have never met.
Compare the tracks in the clips below and tell us what you think. All we know is one track has a lot more Bruce Willis than the other, so yippe ki-yay Eddy Grant.
