Fabled London nightclub Matter – which shot up in 2008 after years of planning from the people behind similarly loved superclub Fabric – is reportedly facing some severe financial woes at the moment, with a chorus of rumours swelling over the future of the club, with some saying that it’s shutting down for the UK summer and others going even further to speculate that the club itself has gone bankrupt.
Chatter began to build about Matter’s escalating dramas on the UK club forum RaveTalk, with punters pointing to some comments from regular Matter DJ Yousef about the club, with the DJ saying that “due to many reasons, the main one being the lack of transport to the venue, Matter has shut for the summer. Sad times. They are an amazing bunch down there.”
As if shutting for the entirety of the summer, which you’d think would be any club’s most busy period, wasn’t bad enough news for the multi-story O2 club, the word has seemingly spread that the club’s troubles have stretched so far that Matter is now bankrupt, with a forum poster insisting that “as of this weekend have gone bankrupt and will soon be closing their doors”, also citing a number of reasons for the closure, saying that “it cost an arm and a leg getting in, the security were very heavy handed, and the drinks prices were through the roof.”
Whilst idle forum gossip is never a completely reliable source of information, the comments from Matter resident Yousef seem to spell some very dark times ahead for the big London club. This would of course come just a week after the depressing news that UK dance festival Glade had to be cancelled following rising fees and disappointing ticket sales.
We’ll wait for an official statement from Matter officials about if the rumours are true and, if so, when the club will indeed shut up shop and how it will impact on this month’s remaining events featuring the likes of Laidback Luke and Infected Mushroom.
